This may seem like a silly post but it is actually really bothering me. I am a 22yr old guy and I am trying to get in to a relationship with a girl. The problem is, I am REALLY bad with interpreting if a girl likes me. I am pretty shy at first but usually open up and use humour a lot around girls. I have never been a big "player" or anything but I think I am a pretty good looking guy. I get told a lot by girls that I am "cute". This is really confusing at times coz different people have different definitions for what they mean by "cute". I think when I am talking to a girl and she is showing an interest in me, I am not forward enough in showing her that I am interested. It is just something I am not good at doing and probably due to a lack of confidence. But, can girls here please tell me what they mean when they say a guy is cute? And does it normally mean that they like you?

What a girl means by saying "you are cute" depends on the guy she says it to. For sure it is nothing negative, like Minxie I wouldn't say that if I didn't mean it. But cute can be just "cute like my little brother" or "I am shy myself and don't want to use strong words like attractive, hot, etc although I think you are so I just call you cute".

Better ask the girl straight away if she can specify it :-)

No big help, I guess, but must be said.

to me, calling a guy cute is the same as calling a girl lovely......it's sweet in a frienship kind of way.

Yeah I totally agree that it can definitely mean different things and depends on how it is delivered. I have a pretty "boyish" look and wouldn't be very rugged. I used to get it a lot when I was younger and I guess I thought I would grow out of the "cute" stage but I still get it a lot now. The thing is I never know how to react to it coz it is usually said in a pretty playful way. I was in America last year and I hooked up with a few girls who thought I was cute, and when I asked them what they meant, they said that I was attractive. However, I feel like it might be different for Irish girls when they say it. American girls are a bit more forward in expressing themselves so maybe that has something to do with it. It is just annoying coz I am a pretty shy guy and I am always afraid of embarrising myself by pursueing it when a girl calls me cute. I feel like I will make a show of myself if it turns out she meant something else by it. So what is the best way to respond then if a girls calls you cute?

Say thank you and smile :)

might be a bit daunting at first overcoming your
shyness but looking at your post above you
dont seem to have any problems in the looks
    department...
get to know the girl a bit better and see how things
progess, ask her out for a drink and just be yourself op....
    best of luck....:D

cute means good looking yes, but imo a guy can be more 'cute' than 'hot' or vice versa. e.g i would call somebody who was very babyfaced cute!

thats jus my opinion but its a good thing still ;)

    Hi OP
2 things here - first is stop trying - it will happen when it happens. Just relax and be yourself, when someone tries too hard they give off the wrong signals and worst case attracts the wrong type

Second - yup, know how you feel there - still in same boat - I never ever have a clue.

Just focus on developing some friendships, that is how I met my o/h after yrs of fruitless searching I basically gave up and just got out and enjoyed myself - just doing things with my friends and talking to people. When you relax around folk you will be amazed at how much easier it is to talk.
When the right girl comes along hopefully you will either pick up on it or just try your luck and ask her out, I took a shot after knowing someone for a while and it worked. She happened to be one of my best friends who I had grown closer to over a few years but it really worked out well for us. I felt it was a complete gamble on my part, she thought I just was not interested...

You never know when you will meet the one, but while you are so focussed on trying to meet her - you might be ignoring the fact that you already have - if you get my drift.
