Fitting shoes

I've finally decided the my runners just aren't euro enough, and I need some shoes.

I'll be buying whataver is cheap and fits, so i'm not looking for advice on models, more on fit. What do I need to look out for in particular, or is it similar to fitting other shoes?
Room for toes to wiggle a bit?
Heel held well and doesn't move up and down?
Snug around the middle of the foot?

Is there anything else obvious (or not so obvious) that I'm missing?

    Thanks

I think you should try a few on. I got a pair of expensive sidi 2 years ago online that i thought were great at the time, but realised they were actually very tight after I got a new pair of Nike shoes which I much prefer to wear and were a third of the price of the Sidis. Now I won't wear my Sidi's even though they are way Euro-er than my Nike ones.
