Which road tax system?!

Hi everyone...just a quick question about motor tax (I'm extremely confused and would really appreciate any help!).

I'm living in the UK and about to start a 12-18 month work contract. I'm considering buying a 2006 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI over here (in the UK) and I'm aware that if I complete my 18 month contract working in the UK, I can then move back home to the Republic and bring the car with me VRT-free.

The bit I'm confused about is road tax - which system will be applied to a 2006 Ford Focus? I've heard conflicting things and read conflicting things. Will I be taxed under the new CO2 emissions based system as the car will be newly registered within the Irish State? Or will I be taxed under the old engine size system as the car is 3 years old?

Thank you in advance!! I want to get my facts right before I start buying as I do intend to move home within 2 years and I want to buy a car that can be run sensibly on Irish roads.

you will pay road tax based on it being a 1.6litre car.
CO2 figures dont come into it unless you had to pay VRT.

Pre 2008 first registered imported and non imported cars are taxed on the engine capacity motor tax system.

Jan to July 2008 first registered non imported cars had the option of either the engine size or emissions tax system depending on which was lower.

2008 onwards first registered imported cars use the emissions based motor tax system.

So to summarise the motor tax on a 06 Focus 1.6 TDCi imported and registered in Ireland will be €445 for 12 months.
