I actually fancy getting one of these to use just as a Walkman (already with O2 on pay monthly). Is there any problem getting this and simply not using it as a phone?

You would be better off buying a sony walkman DAP to be honest, battery life on that phone used as a DAP won't be fantastic. Most sony DAP's can be found quite cheap (except their flagship players)

No doubt a standalone player would be better - but i have a 4GB M2 card full of music from my old phone I don't want to waste! Or are there any players which take them? Player would only be used c. 1 hr per day so battery life isnt a huge consideration.

Tho im a big SonyEricsson fan theres a horrible flip down plastic front of that phone that digs into the palm of your hand, avoid it!

Vodafone are also offering this phone at the same price as O2, but Vodafone will throw in a pair of speakers for your trouble;
