Confused about Freesat/Free to view etc

    Hi,

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find what I was looking for.

I'm confused about all the different 'free' satellite options. Could someone explain?

My Sky contract is up in July and I don't want to renew so I'd like to know what my options are (apart from NTL). The cheaper the better! I currently have Sky multiroom with 2 Sky+ boxes - I think these are mine to keep. I would ideally like to have some kind of PVR.

Could some of you gurus let me know what you think might suit - in layman's terms please!:D

The PVR functionality on your Sky+ boxes won't work without an active Sky subscription. They are yours to keep/sell.

If you want a good non-subscription PVR, I would suggest the Humax Foxsat HDR, which will also get the 7-day Freesat EPG, as well as a few HD channels to boot.

Thanks, would that work with my current dish? And is it expensive? I'm ditching Sky as can't afford it so wouldn't want to spend much for now.

What channels could I get with my Sky boxes and is there any way of connecting some kind of PVR to them that wouldn't cost too much?

Is it the Freesat channels I could get or free to view? Sorry, I'm confused by all the different names.

Have just been reading up a bit on Wiki but still unsure of what's what. If I drop my Sky subscription would it be the free to air channels I could view?

if you take the viewing card out of the sky box you will see the channels you will get. (although if you go for the Humax Foxsat HDR it will look different )

you will loose RTE 1 2 tv3 and tg4, unless you can pick them up via aerial.

richersounds have them for about 280 ish delivered there is a thread about them here

your existing dish and cables will work fine,
