Contracting to Permanent - P45 Question

At the moment, I'm doing some contracting work through one of the big contracting firms. For a few reasons, I didn't hand in a P45 at the start of my contracting period so I've been paying emergency tax on all my wages.

Thankfully, I'll be moving to a permanent job soon so I'm wondering, if I just hand my current P45 to my soon-to-be employers, can I claim all my emergency tax back through them or will I have to get a new P45 first from the contracting firm?

Hi, a bit of a tircky one for ya. Is you first P45 from a job you left in 2009?Ideally when ya started with the contracting firm they should get the P45, but only if its from 2009, in new tax years, P45s from previous years are effectively obsolete, but if its from 2009 the contracting firm should have ideally got this so they can take account of any pay and tax from 01 Jan to date of starting so they can fill it in on your P45 when you leave them (the contracting firm) and include all your income from this year on it so Revenue can issue you a tax cert that allows them to give you the right tax credits on a wk to wk basis. But cause that hasnt been the case when you start your new job you will have to give them the most recent P45, the contracting one. Your first P45 should already be on the revenue system, the new company may well refund any tax if it is unaware of previous job but you may end up owing Revenue a few quid next yr

I actually ended up sending in my p45 to the company dealing with my contracting stuff. The P45 was from 2009 so hopefully that'll get pushed through soon and I'll get a newer P45 in a few weeks.

If you sent in your P45 then the contracting company should have processed it.

Did you ring revenue and tell them you had changed jobs and given them the details? If you did they will have updated your tax records, and between that and the P45 there is no valid reason why you should be paying emergency tax for more than one pay period after you sent in the P45 at which point you should get any refund of tax you are entitled to.

If I were you I'd ring the contracting people and ask what's going on, to confirm they have recieved the P45.

Did you send the original or a copy?

I only sent it in on Friday so it'll be processed this week. The original was sent though. There's a couple of reasons why I didn't send it in, none of which I'll go into here. Just trying to find out the easiest/quickest way at this moment for claiming back tax.

They should process it for you in your next payslip, to speed it up, ring the revenue with your company's details, they will update ROS and the info will be available to your contracting company the next day, which along with the P45 should be all they need!
