Ramon Calderon Charged In Postal Voting Scandal - Report

Ramon Calderon has been charged for his part in the postal vote scandal at Real Madrid, which saw him become president of the club back in 2006.

Marca reports that a court in Madrid has named both Calderon and one of his associates, Mariano Rodriguez, Nanin, in the plot.

Along with the pair, the courts have charged Juan Mendoza, former vice-president of Calderon, members of the candidacy of Juan Palacios, a competitor for the position in 2006, and Alfonso Carrascosa, a collaborator of Calderon's during the elections.

The postal vote scandal was thought to be the main reason why Calderon became president in the first place back in 2006, as thousands of votes were excluded.

In the elections, Calderon won his position with about 8,000 votes, not even an eighth of the electorate, after a judge had nullified all postal votes after fears of rigging.

At the time, the Spanish media reported that a large number of the 10,511 votes that were excluded by the judge had been for Villar Mir, who was thought to be the closest rival to Calderon.

He ended up finishing 1,642 votes behind the winner, whilst Juan Palacios received just 246 votes less than Calderon.

That scandal set the tone for what was to be a traumatic reign as president, and he eventually resigned last winter after another voting scandal.

On this occasion, Calderon was discovered to have snuck non-members into the Assembly to make sure that his decisions were passed, a move that proved to be his downfall.
