Hi all, if customs have stopped a delivery coming in from the USA do they contact you, or does an post let you know or what.
I ordered something from ebay a few weeks ago (not gear sadly :( ) and it hasnt arrived - I though someone on here might know the answer to this.
    Cheers

Depends on a number of things, incl the shipping company, value, etc.

    Have you a tracking number?

I'm never sure on this one.
I got a chassis cradle from Weber in the states and the courier themselves handling the customs charges and invoiced me after they had delivered.
A buddy got a bass neck and it sat in customs until he went looking for where it was, they said that was normal policy.
Voodoo, could you explain a bit more on the courier piece, it seems different couriers have different policys on this?
I know there's been a few threads in the past on this but everytime I think I understand it I hear a story where something completely different happens.

The likes of DHL etc will process the customs charges on your behalf and charge you a premium for doing so, regardless of whether the items are eligible for taxing or not. If you go the standard route the customs in Portlaoise should take no more than a day to process and the postie will look for money when he shows up at the door.

OP, if your item is taxed it should only hold up delivery by a day or two. The idea that you have to chase them to get a delivery doesn't correspond with my experiences, you've paid for it to be delivered, that fact that is hasn't been delivered isn't good, you need to get on the phone and start asking questions.

    Doc is right IMO.

Now, if you haven't gotten it and it's been several weeks then you should contact the seller. I had a problem like this recently with a pedal I bought from a company in the USA. It turns out that someone filled out the customs form incorrectly and it never left the USA. They didn't have a tracking number, but... they did have the customs form number and were able to find it by this.

It was sent by USPS mail not DHL so I've no tracking number unfortunately.
Whats the place in Portlaoise, An post or the Customs & Excise people? I might see if I can contact them.

Sometimes the irish customs will hold on to an item from outside the EU, untill you email them the paypal receipt. Then the customs can work out, how much tax to charge you (25%). In this case, you receive a letter from them, with the instructions.

Recently the customs just work out the tax from the invoice on the parcel, and then pass it on to the 'An Post', which just happens to be in the same building in Portlaoise. Probably because there is too much packages coming through these days.
