55 in a 50? That's 3 miles of discrepancy. Very unfair tbh, what else were you doing? Anything wrong with the car, etc.

You could nearly protest that, as there is more than likely a bigger discrepancy in your speedometer. Personally, I wouldn't be happy with that, but as far as legal advice goes, I have none.

Tbh the speed limits between moate and athlone are a joke. 80km/h and its one of the better roads Ive seen! There's no reason the limit couldn't be 120km/h, especially now that the bypass has taken all the traffic off the road.

    Just stupid so it is.

Also, people being pulled has to do with the new seargent in the area. He's been described as "quite harsh*" and is apparently pulling people for anything possible.

    *ahem, insert words as appropriate.

Honestly, this has cropped up a fair bit and is a very childish attitude. What exactly are you looking for a gard who already stopped someone to do? Race to his car and head off in hot pursuit?

He was dealing with you and isnt in a position to deal with other speeders until he's finished.

Did he give u a ticket btw?

80km/h and its one of the better roads Ive seen!

The OP already admitted being pulled in a 50 zone, nothing to do with the 80 limit.

If a ticket was issued with 55 as the speed limit, I would safely say that the guard could argue that your speedo was reading around 60 - therefore you were knowingly over the speed limit.

these speed limits are a complete mess like 80kph on great rd and then a 100kph on a little main rd like who plans these things

It's purely the councils fault that the speed limits are what they are.

By default, roads in Ireland get a 100 km/h limit for national routes, 50 km/h limit for urban areas, and 80 km/h for all other routes. This default limit is why so many tiny back roads have 80 limits.

The kilbeggan-athlone road used to be a national primary road, the N6, before the M6 motorway was built, and had a 100 km/h limit (or the equivalent in mph). When the motorway opened, it was downgraded to a regional road, and automatically got an 80 limit, as it was not a national road any more.

The council would be perfectly within their rights to put a 100 km/h limit on it - they just couldn't be arsed, and are probably allergic to the whole idea of raising a speed limit anyway.

Its down to the road lettering. The old N4 has been downgraded to a 'R' road and therefore doesn't qualify for 100km/h

Focus: The OP was done for exceeding the 50 kph limit inside a town, the same place he would have been done for breaking the urban 30 mph limit back in the day because he's a pillock. Whoever planned that: excellent!

But it doesn't mean that it HAS to be 80 km/h - that's just what it gets by default. The council decide what speed limits are set in their areas, and can change them as they wish - there is no legal barrier to the road having a 100 km/h limit.

The speed limit is x and i was doing x+5 and i shouldn't be punished

Most of the limits are a joke i agree, but you should never chance it in 50km/h zones

Oh I know that but there are a lot of things that the councils should do. Getting them to do it is a completely different matter!

You're as mad as a mad thing! This is a town, one of the old 30 mph zones we're talking about!
