    Hi,
Just wondering have many people bought their iphones from ebay? I've been lookin at one that is refurbished A grade with 3 months warranty. Its costing 300 euro.
Does anyone have any experience of buying their phone from ebay or if ye have any thoughts on whether the phone sounds like a good deal.

    Thanks in advance,
    Patrick

its 2g not 3g u should buy a 3g one...im not queite shure of the difference between them but im shure you could find out easy on google

i was weighing up 2g vs 3g alright. I'm on vodafone prepay so a few people have told me 2g is the way to go as i wouldn't be using the 3g internet. As long as the wifi was working i'd be happy with that

With a new one in June there will be a glut of 2g's and 3g's as people upgrade.

I've never bought an iPhone off ebay, but I have bought other phones without problem. Usual rules apply - common sense, sellers feedback and make sure it is a genuine iPhone (looks like it is).

That just doesn't make sense to me.

Why are you recommending 3g if you don't know the difference? Is it because 3 is bigger than 2?

patrickincork - because you are on Vodafone, you need to be aware that they do not have an EDGE network, which the 2G iPhone uses. If you want to use mobile data on the move, you will be stuck with painfully slow GPRS. Might not be an issue for you as the phone has WiFi.

As Rew says, it might be worth waiting until June to see what the crack is with the new model. You can be sure there will be a lot of older models at knock-down prices available.

    +1

And €300 seems pretty steep as it is, for a phone that's will be two models behind in a few months time.

    Thanks for the replies!

Probably might be worth my while waiting until June. I thought 300 seemed like a decent price. I'm pretty impatient though, so you never know, i still might get it!!

Sorry i'm back again to bother ye!

I'm still looking on ebay, found this phone which is listed as new. The seller tells me it has never been used so the original firmware 1.1.4 is on the phone. I've been looking through the forums to unlock it myself as its locked to o2.

Anyone have any ideas on this, sorry for the questions, just want to be sure before i part with my money!!

    Cheers,
    Patrick

thats another 2G iphone ..... hold out for a 3G or just buy one in a shop (keep an eye on adverts/gumtree/donedeal.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 229 ✭✭patrickincork

The internet on the go doesn't bother me though for 3G. As long as the phone has wifi i'm happy. The price difference is pushing me towards 2G

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,584 ✭✭✭PCPhoto

no point in wasting your money on a 2G model ..... especially as there will be loads of them available (prices will drop) once the new one is released in summer (a month or so)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 229 ✭✭patrickincork

Cheers for the advice, you're not the first person on here to tell me that and i think i'll finally take it on board and wait! Eager to get one, but i'll hold off until the new phone is released!

    Thanks again!

once the new phone is actually on sale there will be loads of people upgrading so 2G and 3G models will sell reasonably cheap - beware that you may purchase and the find that another one was cheaper....so be prepared to miss or grab a bargain.

In the exact same boat as you mate .....

Im on Vodafone and want a iPhone "yesterday" ?(really impatient) but i have been doing a lot of reading up and waiting til June is the only way to go .

The new O.S 3.0 that will be on the new headsets alone is worth waiting for not to forget some of the hardware changes been suggested on the new release (fingers crossed) .
You can update an older 3g iphone to O.S 3.0 but i want the hardware changes also .

Wait for the new version in June and i am sure their will be a version of Yellow snow or get a factory unlocked iphone and reap all the new software & hardware .

    My 2 pence`worth.

    M

Just one quick point for anybody hoping to use the new iphone on any network other than O2. I would recommend buying a 3g or 2g for the meantime because the new iphone won't be unlocked until Christmas or later if Apple have made it even more difficult.

From experience. I bought a 3g within a week of release for a pretty penny in America and it was lying in the drawer for 6 months.

The 2g was unlocked in a matter of weeks
    The 3g took a massive 6 months.

Apple now know where the vulnerabilities lie in the software allowing this unlocking to happen. So:

    A) Apple could make it almost impossible for unlock by patching these vulnerable areas.
    B) Will do the smart marketing move and make it easier as they sell millions of them which are used on different networks and they know it.

My guess is the new iphone will take at least 6 months to a year for unlocking. The dev team have already jailbroken it though.

    Apple,

Valid point BUT .... Surley there will be an factory unlocked version of the new iphone which will work on any network and also be updatable without relocking ?

    Nuts,

There certainly will be but it will cost the big bucks again on ebay unless your planning a trip to italy, Aus, France etc

Just as well you didn't get a chance to take my advice Patrick,
turned out to be a massive scam. I got stung with it.

The companies ebay account was shut down but heres the link to their homepage if anybody wants to follow the fallout

    Hi Guys,
I've had a change in circumstances seeing as my phone of 2 years packed up on me yesterday! Now its a phone out of neccessity rather than a want! I've been looking earlier at 3G iphones.

Am i right in thinking that even with 2.2.1 firmware i can unlock it using Cydia if i jailbreak the phone? Was looking at getting a rebel simcard but i'd be afraid it wouldn't work.

    Cheers,
    Patrick

    Nope,

If the phone has 5.09 baseband it cant be unlocked yet
If the phone had 5.08 baseband it can be unlocked once the bootloader version is downgraded.

Basically if the phone was made after September 2008 it will have 5.09 and won't be able to be unlocked yet. Chances are if you buy one new from O2 directly it will have the latest 5.09 baseband.

If you want an unlocked one you will have to buy a second hand one with software version 2.2. And then if you upgrade that you will loose the unlock.

Oh and furthermore its probably the worst time ever to buy a rebel sim, or an iphone for that matter.

The 3.0 OS for iphone is only 3 weeks away and the rebel sim wont work if you upgrade to this version. It will have a lot of new features as will the new iphone. I'd buy some piece of crap for €20 that will last the three weeks on adverts and get the new iphone when you can get your hands on one in a few weeks.
