Long story but basically feeling depressed because I am being bullied at work have tried sorting it out even asked for a meeting but this has been ignored. I have an appointment to see a psychiatrist which has to be confirmed this week. I live in a small town and have just come back from doctors (had to get a sick note for work). The receptionist wanted to know what to write down on note and I said I'd rather not say, as the waiting room was full. Basically I want to know has anyone suffered depression/been to see a psychiatrist in a small town and how did they cope with everyone knowing their business? And please don't just say ignore what everyone else says or thinks, that's easier said than done.

the only ones who will know your business are teh gp, psychiatrist and their secretaries/receptionists.

it is a breach of confidentiality for them to discuss your case with anyone, and this is an offence which warrants disciplinary action, so do not worry, they wont be discussing your details with all and sundry.

On another point, you really need to get the real reason for being out of work listed on your sick note in case you ever decide to take a case against the bullying. It is vital to have as much back up as possible so ring the surgery and get them to re-issue the cert. In future ask the doctor if he/she can ring out to the receptionist to tell them what to write on the cert so that you dont have to discuss it in front of everybody else.

Are your direct bosses the owners of the business? Are you a member of any trade unions? If possible you should take the matter to those above your immediate colleagues if your requests for fixing matters are being ignored.

Thanks for the feedback. Just got a bit of shock when receptionist asked in front of everyone. It's a small town and gossip spreads like wildfire. Have told my boss but he has his head buried in the sand. There was to be a meeting with my trade union rep but the other person involved who is senior to me has told me that they will not go into any meeting with me now even though they had previousy agreed to. I just feel really messed up and don't want the added stress of everyone in my home town knowing my business. Just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience and how did they deal with it.

Sounds like the people involved are doing everything they can to avoid responsibility. You should be persistent and get your concerns heard. It's not fair the way they are treating you but you don't have to put up with it. Maybe you should consider seeking legal advice too.

Consult a solicitor immediately - doesnt have to be in your own town.I reckon a well worded legal letter will work wonders with your bosses. The secret here is to be strong and never take messing from any job.Look at the papers every day. There are loads and loads of cases being dealt with where bully boss thinks he is in the right- until he is a good few thousand euro short by order of the court. Not saying it will come to that with you.

Bully thrives on not getting a good response. If he sees weakness at all it only gets worse and worse.Applies in the school yard and the workplace.tell everything to your doc.record everything.Dates ,times ,etc.

Work related stress is a serious matter and woe betide any pre historic employer out there who thinks he will get away with it.But you must never, ever back down.Beware of the softly softly talk if he knows you are dealing with it.It could happen again if he sees you back down.

Medical matters are confidential and doctors and receptionists are bound by a strict confidentiality code.Theywill be up the creek without a paddle if they make the mistake of ever revealing your private affairs to anyone.
