'New' iPhone

My contract with Vodafone expired a couple of months back and I was planning on moving to O2 this week to get an iPhone to replace my N95. However, I've heard from a couple of people that Apple are set to announce a new, updated model of the iPhone next month. Does anyone know just how much substance are in these rumours, and would it be better for me to just bide my time?

Also is it expected that the changes will come the way of a firmware update and/or bigger storage space or are hardware upgrades to the device itself on the cards? 16gb is more than enough for me as it stands.
