lads I think I really need to get a diesel, I've never had one and i'm not a big fan, in the last few weeks i've tried out an audi a4 and really disliked it, it felt rough and noisy compared to any petrol car i've had...

Is there any nice ones (smooth) out there with at least 150bhp, 45+mpg and 2.0L or under? Does such a car exist?

What about a tdci mondeo, all diesels are rough and noisy in comparison to petrols. At least the mondeo is cheap to buy and run and corners like its on rails.

A 1.6 (PSA Engine) focus would be down on power for what you want but its quite quiet, or a 2L one from england would be good value.

A brand new Impreza diesel is only around €21k, you might get a used one for close to your budget? I drove a Legacy diesel for a day recently, fuel consumption was half that of my Forester 2.5XT..

Volvo S40? Should pick up a 06 2.0d SE 140bhp for that money. BMW320d? Again, you'd get a 05 one, and i think they are 170bhp. And lastly, a Mazda 6. Should get a 06 2.0Tdi 140bhp Exec for that kind of money....

How many used ones would be around? A handful of demos, might be lucky to get one at a very good price though.

Is that the Alfa GT, i've been playing with the idea, it looks like a diesel I could live with, if i could live with an alfa that's another question, are they really that unreliable....

i just have alfa = ball of ****, programmed into my brain, i've never had an alfa so i don't think i'm being fair to them, or am i ?

You might be right, I just had a quick look on carzone and the cheapest one was this: http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1361280

156 Lusso, same engine different body, drive one, took me by suprise in a big way. Next car for me will be a GT!
Not going into the old arguments but I've never had a problem with an Italian car and I've been in Fiats and Alfas for over 9 years now, they definately have their quirks (cup holders guys???) but not a fault yet, touch wood, wish I could have said the same thing for the last landcruiser I had and Toyota are supposed to be the best.

I don't like the new impreza, not in standard form anyway, looking for something a little more luxurious, leather, cruise control etc..

it looks like it's going to be a GT for me as well, I can't see anything that compares, power and specifiction wise...

Not many 156 diesels for sale, what's up with the cup holders?

I wouldn't worry about Alfa reliability, in my experience as long as the car is well cared for it should go the distance.

Volkwagen Golf GT TDI 2002 150bhp (Anniversary Model)

    check MAF.
Not sure if the Golf has a DPF installed.

    or VFM

    Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTI 16v 150bhp

check Swirl Flaps and EGR Value (easy to clean) Car has a DPF so need to take it on long runs very now and again to get enough heat to burn of old carbon deposits.

Watch out for in General with Diesels.

Regular Oil change is just vital.

White Smoke - Water mixing with Fuel
Black Smoke - Injector problems - a good cleaning to fix this.
Blue Smoke - burning oil. Oil seals to be looked at. Stay clear.

GF's VX Astra 1.7 CDTI (100bhp) diesel lets out some blue smoke but not clouds of the stuff. Great car bags of bang for your buck.

Yup diesels are rough and nosiey. I love them.

Ive always liked the sound from the BMW 3.0L diesels at idle (the only time really hear a diesel).
