Corpse Bride on Television - As Gaeilge!!!

I know this is a thread about a movie, but it is a movie on television, and I cant see it being shown anywhere else but on television. Mods move it if you feel the need.

Was channel surfing a minute ago, when I came across Corpse Bride. I loved this movie the minute I saw it, but in my haste to change over to it, I did not realise it was on TG4 and therefore was not expecting it to be in irish. I have to say I think they have ruined it for me. Not just by translating it into Irish but by changing the names of the charachters to make it easier to translate. In the original the main charachter is called Victor Van Doitte, and his Fiancee was called Victoria, but in the irish version he is called Padraig Scadan and she is called Padraigin(which means Patricia?)

What are peoples views on this? Does it feel strange to anyone else? I have watched movies that were dubbed in different languages before, but I dont remember as much poetic license being used such as changing the names of charachters in such a drastic way.

It just feels weird to me, and to be honest, this adds to my feelings of irish being forced on me my whole life. Anyone else feel this way?

I'm not going to insult the French for a French dubbed American film, so likewise I'm not going to insult native Irish speakers by degrading them for watching a few international films that have been dubbed into their first langauge.

Similar things happen in other langauges that don't have huge amounts of speakers, mainly because they have to do this process on a shoestring budget. Adding to that, many words don't have translations in other langauges and, personally, when someone is speaking Irish and then says an English name (which was probably the only other option) it is far more jarring than the choice that was made.

If you feel TG4 showing something in Irish with some (ultimately minor) alterations is forcing Irish on you you ever so slightly missed the point of the channel in the first place.

Excellent to hear they're dubbing stuff in Irish; the language deserves at least that. We don't have to have English forced on us all the time either.

Good to see they have Irish subtitles with South Park now aswell seeing as the accents can be hard to follow.

I don't think any movies should ever be dubbed (into any language).
I've never seen it done well.

Because the exact translation from language A to B is usually of different length they either have to reduce the text or have a situation where the dubber is still speaking but the actor is finished, and it just looks ridiculous.

Just use subtitles and original language, its the way the makers intended it to be viewed.

(Its less of a problem in cartoons, but I've seen TG4 do it for live films as well).

Cartoons/Animations have to be dubbed into the original language in the first place, so I think it makes more sense to dub them rather than subtitle.

For live action films I prefer good subtitles.
I remember watching La Haine where the subtitles were very american, they even translated "Asterix" as "Snoopy"

TG4 is an Irish language channel, for people who want to watch such shows / films

If you dont like things as Gaeilge, dont watch TG4

I do agree tho about the changing of names

The age of the dubbers is another thing

Harry Potter was dubbed by 30 y/o, when Harry, Ron and Hermoine are meant to be 10!

I can well imagine the uproar from Irish speakers if RTE dubbed an Irish language film or show into English. As far as I'm concerned if you are watching a foreign film in anything bar the original language with subs you are missing out.

A large part of a performance is in the delivery of dialogue and having someone come in years later and dub over it robs the dialogue of it's emotion. Could you imagine someone coming in and dubbing over the Mount Doom scenes in Return of the King?

Ah I dont think TG4 would have that in mind

I think its more the novelty of havin more films in Irish

Not everyone wants to scan through subs for 90 mins, even if it sacrifices the emotion

Esp with film like HP & Corpse' Bride

Was going to watch this until I saw it was dubbed, cant stand dubbed movies, just use subtitles it ruins the movies, plus the people who do the dubbing cant act
