Munster Open Championship - New Irish Junior Record

Indeed, excellent to see national field event records (in particular) being broken. It's important that individual athletes continue to raise the bar so that times/distances that were previously considered out of reach are shown not to be so.

Good news for Irish field eventing. The National Senior record is only just over a meter away.

Another interesting development was Eilish Fitzpatrick's win in the 100m, with a wind legal 11.89. Think she was born in '91, so that makes her 18 I think.

That's good news for the depth of Irish women's short sprinting, with three Juniors qualified for the Euro Juniors and four for the U23s. Now, just for Anna Boyle, Ailis McSweeney and D O'R to get back around the 11.5 region :)

As well, see helpisontheway's post in the Rankings Thread about Claire Fitzgerald getting the Euro Junior standard in the Shot in the Kerry County Champs on friday, http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055521318&page=2.

Also with Colin Quirke burning it up Stateside, we'll should have two throwers at the Euro Juniors.

Eilish is indeed u19 so has another season at Junior level. She was on the Irish Junior team that broke the national record last year in Germany and her reward was being dropped from that team for the world juniors as she had one bad individual race at national juniors.Im sure that has given her the motivation to train even harder this season and show AAI the mistake they made. She is also in the middle of her leaving cert year and last i heard also works a weekend job.She competed for her club at the recent Kerry juvenile championships winning gold in 100m,200m,100m hurdles[Former national juvenile and multi events champion] and medals also in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. She definetly has the attributes to progress further.

I'd missed that about Claire, great. Personally I hope she can stick to the junior ranks this year without having to be thrown into the seniors (e.g. European Cup).

And, as with Colin, it's time that all Phil Conway's good work down at Belfield bore fruit at a higher level. (I believe he was coached by Phil).

Joe Douglas, manager of Carl Lewis, said it can be dangerous to train and race angry. The motivation and adrenaline will carry you for 2 or 3 races but for long term progress its not something you should ever have to rely on. Fair point and looking back I can see it makes sense. Also, the Irish athletics selection process always has and always will be frought with inconsistency. Happens in UK too. Fairest is select a race, who wins goes. I presume her bad race was Nationals in which case, fair enough, tough call but fair enough. Now if she had made top whatever and hadn't gone it would have been a tough call.

Is he not coached by his dad in the States?

Could well be. Being a Crusaders lad I assumed he'd come via Phil & Belvedere. Apologies to his Dad :)

His dad wasn't bad, a 20.04 man in his day:cool: A chip off the old block.

Yes, he's based Stateside in Oklahoma. As Tingle pointed out, he has quite the coach/mentor at his disposal, in the form of his Dad who competed at Barcelona '92.

Colin Quirke is now at the University of Oklahoma, he red-shirted the indoor season. The Uni of Oklahoma have a pretty extensive Biography for him:

Brilliant, thanks for the link. I didn't realise he had such pedigree, me being a new boy and all. Wouldn't it be great to have a revival of the old Irish-American ascendancy in the throws clap.gifclap.gif

There already is. Conor McCullough, who is 4th all-time on our Hammer list has a son by the same name. He was ranked 6th Junior in the world last year and won silver in the World Juniors' (for the USA :()

    thanks

I think the finest performance of all came from Robert Heffernan who walked 38.49 in windy conditions for the fastest 10km in the world this year. How was this not on the AAI website?

Mark Hanrahan and Craig Murphy also had quite a battle in the 1500m after a slow opening 800m in 2.07-2.08, Hanrahan took it in 3.53 with Murphy 3.55.

Fine runs also from juniors Shane Quinn, Liam Markham and Dean Cronin all with EYOF standards.

Great to see so many getting these standards. While we don't have a standout star at this age apart from Curtis Woods (who I sadly hear is switching codes to move to Burnley FC:( hope its not true) the fact that so many are getting standards means that it raises the potential that one will breakthrough and become a senior star, the numbers game and all that. I'd imagine we didn't have so many getting underage standards before across such a broad spectrum of events and the standards are higher. Right now for EYOF we have -

    100
    200
    400
    800
    1500
    3000
    100/110H
    Triple Jump

A few have the World Youths too. The World Juniors last year was our biggest and most diverse team ever and while no medals its shows depth is creeping in. Just need to transition them to U23 and Senior in years to come now though!!!

The thing is that College will get on the way or just life itself. So does anyone have the full result?

The U23 results was alright, the Leinster is on the 24th cannot wait. Does anyone know if the winners will be going to an all Ireland event or anything? This is my only chance to compete at the u23 event this year because I will be missing the Woddies U23 event :(

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think there's any all Ireland events that you progress to from the provincial championships @ U23 and Senior level. However, there is the AAI Games & Leinster Seniors to compete in. There's a National League meet a week after the Woodies U23s if you're available then and still wanted a race around that time, you could chance your arm asking to guest in the races there; not sure how successful you'd be, though.

ATM its not about being successful its about me breaking my pb's. This is my first season after disapearing for 3 years. So I need the competition experience. :)

No I meant I didn't know how succesful you'd be in getting a lane in the League meet, not how succesful you'd be athletically; I'm not that bitchy! :D

Sometimes teams competing in the qualifying rounds bring along "excess" athletes who are allowed to guest but not score. Does your local club/county field a team?

No guests allowed in the final.

You might get some competition in the Dublin Graded meets if you can travel that far.

Good luck, and great to see you trying to get back into the sport.

    Other meets include:

7th June Leinster Seniors in Tullamore
13th June NI Champs in Belfast
20th June Dublin Champs in Santry

All great opportunities to get PB's.

And the best chance to run fast this season in Ireland may be tomorrow week at the AAI Games in Athlone. Its on the new mondo track. Mondo are the fastest, bestest BAMF tracks around;) and we finally have one.

    and we finally have one.

There's already one in Lifford, is there not? But I guess Donegal is a long way to go for a lot of people for a Mondo; then again so is flying abroad for one! :P

I am doing the Leinster Senior anyways I really don't see the difference between u23 and seniors. The Dublin one seem very interesting I hope to make that.

Don't think so, I knew it was planned but I never heard of it being laid, could be wrong.
