Morning after pill - extremely worried

    Hi all,

I feel so stupid, I forgot to take my pill yesterday. I stayed over at my boyfriends last night, we don't use condoms anymore, but he didn't come. I woke up at 7 this morning as he was off to work and I immediately remembered my pill which I took right away. I usually take it at 6:05 pm so it was exactly 12 hours later when I remembered to take it. Even so I didn't want to take any risks so I went into town this afternoon to go to the Wellwoman centre, but it isn't open today (I tried calling and waited around for 2 hours). I am panicking now, I think that I am within in the safe 12 hours, but I am really worried, does anyone have any advice, is there anywhere else I can get the MA pill?

    Thanks

You can take the morning after pill up to 72 hours after having unprotected sex. The sooner you take it the better but you will still be able to get it tomorrow morning so just make an appointment first thing. Seeing that you take the pill regularly and he didn't come the chances are very slim inded I would have thought but fair play for being cautious.

you've got 72hrs so relax.it never ceases to amaze me that clinics aren't open sundays/bank hols. surely a huge amount of people have unprotected sex on a sat night...??anyway i'd say the chance of you ovulating are fairly slim but def get the MAP tommorrow asap.ring at 9am on the dot and make an appt, it'll be less than 48hrs after the sex so it should be fine. make sure you know roughly how many hrs it is after the sex, they'll wanna know.

7 day cover with some pills, ovranette for sure...i.e. once you've been taking it for the past 7 days dont worry you should be in the clear but if you've just started a new packet or missed other pills in the last week then defo get MAP.

Check your packet, some types allow a 12 hour window.

Psych 101 probably. Tell people to take it within 12, make it work within 72?

You can ask a doctor specifically about whatever you took.

Personally I can't imagine its like Gremlins.

As other posters have said, there is a 72 hour window after intercourse in which the MAP is most effective.

I presume from your description that you're on one of those pills that have to be taken at the same time every day. If this is the case, then I would advise keeping a pack in your handbag, so that you're never caught out. Otherwise, you could perhaps change to a brand that has a 12 hour window in which to take the pill.

Yikes, you're not using the morning-after pill for *regular* contraception, are you? Not very safe, is it?

That isnt the impression i got at all. In fact id say she is being over safe not under safe, fair play to her!

I wouldnt worry about it, the chances anything will come of it will be slim, but your peace of mind is worth spending €70 on, trust me on this one!

OP, any GP will give you the MAP. You don't have to go to the Well Woman centre. Any walk-in clinic will prescribe it for you, and usually even a regular, appointment-only GP will see you at short notice if you tell them it's an emergency. Just explain to the receptionist.

There is a 72-hour window in which you can take the MAP, but it's most effective within 12 hours. Don't fret too much! Once you get yourself to a doc asap, I'm sure all will be well.

    Hi OP here,

Thanks for all the replies I got the MAP this morning from my GP. I totally agree Lollipops I can't believe that it was impossible to get on a Bank Hol. I had actually looked up the Well woman website yesterday to check opening hours. They operate a Sunday clinic for emergencies, so I assumed it would be the same on a Bank Holiday. You can get it from the Pharmacy in the UK, I think that is actually quite a good idea considering how frantic I was yesterday, even talking to a healthcare professional (ie. a pharmacist) would have helped alot!

Luckat I am certainly not stupid enough to use the MAP as regular contraception!

Thanks again to everyone who replied, you've been a great help.

I have seen an ad on Brtish TV that you can buy the morning after pill over the counter. I think it was called Lornetta or something.

Gee why cant we have the same choice here. Of course we can trek to the north, yeah right.
It be would good for peace of mind to have a pack just as back up for emergency.
Of course not to abuse it, Im sure by over doing it, its bad for the body.
