Sounds like you need to get a bit more secure in yourself before getting involved with any girl. If you're insecure and your gf has a very active social life, you'll spend every night she's out hoping that she won't "find something better", as you say. You need to work on yourself first.

try and find one thats the settling down type. that only has a few friends and wants a quiet life in the country with you. get up every morning sit in the garden and drink coffee

Considering most people's idea of a "social life" in Ireland involves going to average-or-below overpriced and overcrowded pubs and clubs full of drunk people and crap music, I wouldn't worry.

What you need to do is find someone with similar interests and enjoy doing some of those together.

Let me guess she a bebo (or other "social" web 2.0) page with a sprawling photo gallery depicting a huge social circle exciting events around the world...
"Me in timbultu - trek 2008"
"Me sailing round the world 2007"
    "Johns 25th... ... in Monaco 2009"
(those titles are made up, but you get the idea)
