Charlie Kaufman is leaping from typewriter to director's chair with Synecdoche, New York. Released in the UK on May 15, the movie follows Philip Seymour Hoffman's playwright as he builds a life-size replica of New York to stage an ambitious play.

No offense but you clearly didn't get it if it made no sense.

Saw it, absolute fantastic...if you get it ;)

I "got" it and found it horribly pretentious, self-satisfied and unsatisfying, and I'm a huge fan of Hoffman and of the vast majority of Kaufman's earlier work. To be honest, a lot of the praise of the film has the feeling of emperor's new clothes about it, a lot of critics falling over themselves to stress the profundity and complexity of the film. Just because it's complex doesn't mean it's in any way successful.

Nobody is wrong, nobody is right. Vive la difference. Can we skip the inevitable "round in circles" arguments between Kaufman lovers and haters?

I loved it. Yes, its complex but given the themes it was addressing (the nature of art, aging etc...) I felt it needed to be that way - and for the most part, the obscure structure reflects the constantly blurred nature of Caden's mind. A really touching and profound experience, and I can't wait for a second viewing.

I wasn't massively impressed with it either. I must give it a second look though.
