I started cycling around this time last year, for the summer months, and started back again at the end of march.I am already better on the bike than i was last year. so i started cycling with some people who are fairly experienced and fit.I find that i can keep up with them, but it is hard work at the moment,

my main problem as also was last year when i did a cycle that was 80miles is that when it comes to hills, i drop off the pace. when i am out cycling on most hills i will drop off a bit. but i can then catch up on the flat parts.

I feel that as i am constantly changing my pace this will wear me out quicker.

is this because i am not as fit as them at the moment? do i just need to keep training, or do i need to build up my leg muscles a bit more and try train a bit different to help me keep up on the hills?

Either they're not trying as hard on the flats, or you need to go on a diet.

i'd say i am about 6lbs over weight. but if i lose a bit on the hills, i will push
harder on the flats to catch back up.

Climbing is a matter of power/weight ratio so possibly. Your weight would not be holding you back so much on the flat, it doesn't matter so much there (frontal area of a light cyclist and a heavy one is pretty similar.)

More effort on the bike will increase your capacity to keep up certainly. Bear in mind that most cyclists probably do put in more effort going up a hill than on the flat, indeed most probably put in significantly more effort. The pace going up a hill is often dictated by the lightest guys (technically those with the best power/weight ratio) trying quite hard themselves and so everyone else has to kill themselves to keep up, even if they would outsprint these light guys on the flat.

Do you feel you could afford to lose some weight? You are not exactly enormous but no lightweight either, less weight certainly helps on the hills. More cycling helps but look at your diet as well if you want to do this.

yeah i hope to loose about 6+ pounds in the next 2 months, just hope that it won't leave me really weak. although i am hoping as i am eating well at the moment and training hard enough, i hope a few pounds will drop off.
