Do you ever worry condoms may not work???

There was a thread a while ago about the Popes comments on the 'problem' of condoms in Africa.

Everyone was saying their piece and my own opinion was that obviously condoms do help prevent spread of disease and people will have sex anyway so why not encourage them to use em y'know.... but.....

The whole thing got me thinking about how safe condoms actually are. It even says on the Durex box that they are not 100% guarenteed to work for pregnancy or std prevention, and then someone said on the post that their success rate is 82%. Now call this a silly question, but does that mean if you have sex 100 times with random strangers that 18 of those times you are likely to be caught out???

I had a little fun in my youth, (not 100 times!) always protected and never drunk, but looking back at it now, I would not go so far as to say I am worried, but just finding it weird that I never questioned the safety aspect of it all before now??? y'know???

I always wonder where they actually get these figures from. Are they talking about breakages? As far as I am aware if they are used correctly then they are almost 100% effective. The problem usually arises I would say in that people do not understand the basic biological processes behind reproduction and hence this leads to condom failure and hence pregnancy. Also I they are not 100% effective in preventing transmission of all sti's.

statis information for condoms is based on 2 facts if some understand better please explain but dont ask me to explain why I know I just know a little from reading a pamplet or something

    1. The stats they come up with are based on bs standards. Thats the british standard, not bu@@ sh@@. The condoms need to perform with this range to be certified. The funny thing is most condoms have the BS/kite mark so they are no different than durex. its just durex pump in loads of advertising and make you believe they are superman or as I onece seen "would a small difference in price make up for 18 years of pain" Brilliant advertising. Playing on you!!!

    2. Of the 100 people surveyed the simple way to think of it is this. say something is 99% safe thats 99 out of a 100. that could mean if you had sex 300 times you would have 3 failures but here is the thing the failures could in theory although not likely occur in 201 250 and 280, it does not have to be 99 199 and 299. You catch the jist. To certify under the standard there is 1000's of tests done. Here is the thing in a bach test there must be the pass rate but like I say it can be any one.

More importantly the standard only takes into account normal working conditions :D it does not take into :Daccount aggressive use or slow use!
    Still with me.

In a nutshell read the standard they achieve, most do so you will find its no on the box. Really no pics no proof!!

about what the Pope thinks about condoms (or anything else for that matter)
    .
This is a man who is the head of an organisation that believes that a book cobbled together over several hundred years by a bunch of late Bronze Age sheep-herders is the literal and unarguable Word Of God.

This is not excactly a reputable source of information on anything: These guys will say or do anything to get us to stop putting peices of rubber on our mickeys, cause they think for some convoluted reason that doing so makes Baby Jesus cry.

That said: Condoms are 100% effective if used properly, BUT they do break. And actually this happens reasonably often. But , as long as your not banging junkie prostitutes or on holiday in Africa, the 1 time in a 100 that that happens is unlikely to be a problm.

Another thing - even if you're caught out and are one of the x% of cases it fails - it's quite unlikely that it'll be one of those few days of the month when the "ladyfriend" involved can get pregnant.

Having said that, it CAN happen. Personally I always use pill and condoms together just for peace of mind.

Teach me aboutn these wonderful few days!

No, I'm not worried, they have never broken/leaked for me and just have her use the pill too if worried.

The pope don't like condoms because the easiest way to expand the church is have lots of catholics having lots more catholics.

Condoms, if used correctly are 100% safe unless they break- the percentage fail refers to how often they are expected to break. 1/2 times per 100.

Also you'd be an idiot to open yourself up to legislation by claiming anything was 100% ineffective. People burn themselves with coffee every day ffs.

The problem isn't condoms, it's people

That’s so true the guy in the guide clinic told me that latest studies put condoms at 98 or 99.8 % (I cant remember which he said) and the reason why they are not marked 100% or 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 is because they have to allow for miss use , most of which happens when people have been drinking

    Nothing is 100% safe.

You could go to the shops in your car and get hit by a drunken driver.
You could slip in the shower and crack your skull open.
Or you could have sex with a condom (which breaks) and get a fatal disease.

There is risk with everything in life.

If you worry about it you'll go mad, so best to just get on with things and hope for the best...

One thing to bear in my mind is that some stis are transferred even when you wear a condom. You can genital warts/HPV this way.

and i'm pretty sure the 1/100 failure rate for condoms means 1 couple in every hundred will get pregnant in the course of a year using condoms, rather than 1 in every hundred condom uses doesn't work.

Condoms have a perfect use failure rate of 2%, and a typical use failure rate of about 15% (taken from Wikipedia Comparison of Birth Control Methods). I think it would be very unrealistic to expect that you would use a condom perfectly every time. I certainly wouldn't consider condoms 100% safe for preventing pregnancy, although IMO they're probably the best thing available at the moment for helping to prevent the transmission of an STI.

jebus this is a scary thread!!

OP i don't tend to worry about the safety of them, i would be worried if it broke though!that's why i prefer the pill, i know it suits me and i know i can be trusted to take it(only ever missed one in almost 4 years of taking it,and that was during my leaving cert so i can be excused!!!)

The only way to look at it, IMO, is that if they're used correctly, then it's safer to use one than not to use one.

This is highly inadvisable Davy, the main reason being due to friction. It is likely that both condoms will tear if you do this.

but it seems some people dont know this. The last guy that said it to me was in his twenties, and had been with plenty of people. He never said if it ever tore or not

i always worry about leaky condoms. though it,s a life wehave t use it anyhow.

How do people use them wrongly? You put it on, and put it in, and hold it at the top whilst putting it in and then taking it out. Are ye talking about people who start to have sex, then put the condom on after a few minutes? Or are there people who don't know about holding them, or something?
