    hi all

i am interested in trying a six string bass
but cant find one, tried waltons, mm and xmusic

anyone know where i might get to grips with one

i have no idea if i will even be able to handle the neck size
and aint gonna buy one without having a go

its funny as I have never played bass, only dossing now and then
with someone elses, so I may be mad having an interest in a six
but i really like the range and would plan to play a lot of two hand tapping
and bit of slap and pop and primus style stuff

    regards

Hi, I have looked in the past and the only 6 string bass I have ever seen for salee is a Peavey grind 6 NSB for about the 500 mark. That was in MM a few years back, I know that most stores would order it in for you if you wanted to buy it. As for bein mad no I would love to get my hands on one and I mainly play guitar aswel.

There might be some boards users that wouldnt mind meeting up with you if they have a 6 string so you can try it. I know one of the harley Benton cheap yokes was sold on adverts not too long back.

When I picked up a six string a few years back I was told that in order for the shop to get one in for me to try, I'd have to buy it

Most sixers have narrow string spacing, usually around 16.5mm. There are plenty of five string basses (Musicman, G&L, Peavey, Ibanez Soundgear for example) which are also spaced this narrow. This was the killer for me, I like to dig in and I just found it way too narrow between the strings. If you're into popping, plucking and slapping a-la Claypool you'll need to bear this in mind. Try out a Peavey fiver and you'll see if it's something your right hand can live with.

In the end I sold mine because great intentions don't always translate into real life. When I got the six I was playing in a band where I could use the full range and it was worth the extra physical difficulty of the bigger neck. When that band split, the extra bulk of the thing outweighed the benefit of the extra range. I found I needed to play it pretty regularily to keep nimble on it, if I didn't play it for a while I almost had to relearn it when I picked it up again.

Sold it in the end, just wasn't worth the hassle.

I had that Peavey Grind bass, it was a beautiful bass to look at. Bought it cause I though hey why not give it a go.

Biggest piece of ****e I've ever owned and the ONLY bass I've ever given up after buying, it lasted 2 weeks before being returned to MM. I got a new set of strings and as soon as I removed the old ones the bass practically fell apart. There built in Asia as cheaply as possible. Look great but are ****e.

Doc has very valid points about such basses there huge and very hard to play cause of the reason mentioned.

I did play the new MM Bongo6 and its miles/years ahead of of most 6'ers I've played.
