strange iPod touch problem - warning!

I recently had to send my ipod touch to the ipod hospital to get repaired. The headphones would not go in the headphone jack as there was something inside blocking it. After 4 weeks it came back all fixed and I was given details of the problem. A small bead of something that looked like the silica beads you get in those sachets to absorb moisture (e.g. in coats or handbags) had made it's way inside. They had to tear apart the silica and break the bead down.

Now, I haven't bought any new bags recently so I've no idea where it came from but apparently I'm not the first person to bring an ipod touch in for this problem. Another person had something make it's way in to the headphone jack. Foreign matter is not covered by the warranty so I had to pay for the service.

Just thought I'd post here to warn people, especially those who carry their ipod touches in handbags or backpacks that this can happen and I've been advised to put the headphones in the headphone jack when transporting the ipod in a bag.

Well, I'm in NZ so it won't really apply but Apple charged me the minimum repair fee which is $70 (about €30). Is it definitely the hack and not your headphones? (They will ask you this first!)

Yeah I thought it was the headphoens so I bought a new pair (the Apple headphones that come with the iPhone (it has a mic))

f I hold them in a certain position in the jack I can get full sound. €30 seems OK. I thkn I'll fire off a couple of e-mails. I appreciate the reply

Use a toothpick and clear out any fluff that builds up in the headphone jack, I give mine a good clearing out every few weeks, there's always some fluff from your pockets built up in it.

Just a little note on the warranty, myself and my girlfriend bought iPods outside of Ireland and she had a problem with hers and the warranty covered it. They sent a box via UPS for it and they had it fixed and returned within 4 days.
