Highly abnormal smear test results

I'm 31 and had my first smear test few weeks ago. I know silly me..Got my results last Friday and was told by doctor that they were highly abnormal and that they needed to send me for Colposcopy to see how deep the bad cells are. I didn't know at this stage of the levels of cin 1,2,3 so didn't ask but I'm assuming when I asked was it normal to have bad cells and she said it's normal but yours are" highly abnormal and we know straight away we have to look deeper" that I'm prob cin3. She was asking me about cancer in the family etc. I just got feeling from her that the results were bad. As you can imagine I'm worried sick. just worried about how long it been there. I've manage to get an appointment for next Friday- going private

Just wondering has anyone had similar problems and what was the outcome. I've read up on numerous treatments. I don't care what treatment I have to have done as long as at the end of the day that I can still have kids.

Anyone out there putting off smear test. Don't..

no advice to offer you other than you most probably have caught the abnormalities early so try not to worry too much. (as if) but the best of luck to you.

I hope it goes ok with the doctor. Do your best to take a deep breath and try not to stress. Stress will make everything worse, and if you're lucky you'll be stressing over nothing. Dont look things up online, especially when you're not 100% on what the situation is. I've been advised before that smear test results can be difficult to gauge, this is why there is further testing required.

Just dont freak out without good reason. Wait until you're actually with a doctor and can ask questions. Hope it goes ok.

this does not mean you have cancer!!!a family member had to have a procedure when she was 20 to burn off pre-cancerous cells(not as horrific as it sounds) and now just has to go for regular check ups. the doc most likely wants to find out exactly what they're dealing with before they do anything else!please stay calm!!

I had CIN 2 and had to have the above treatment, that was about 6 years ago and my smear tests have been normal since. I know it's impossible not to worry but try not to get too nervous and upset and don't read any more about it either, you'll just drive yourself crazy and imagine the worst.

I have had a smear test every year since I was 18 and would recommend that regardless of what you are told by what passes for a health service in this country that every women have an annual smear test. This is best practice everywhere else in the developed world. I have no faith in the manner in which tests are taken and processed in the new cervical check programme, the tests are sent to Houston for test and analysis, aside from the fact that there are different standards, the lab in Houston which got the Irish government contract has a very poor reputation and a high number of inaccurate results.

Over the years I have also had abnormal smear test results and had cells frozen and scraped off. I was then told to have a smear test every 3 months for a 12 month period, all were clear. I have since had one abnormal and a follow up normal three months later which was fine. I now have to go for another test as a result of an abnormal result 3 months ago.

Try not to worry but do have the follow up treatment immediately and ensure that you have a smear test every three months for the next year. The will try to talk you out of this but stand your ground and demand that they do the tests. You could always go privately, the cost ranges from €70 to €120 you can claim this back on your taxes and if you have private medical cover check with your insurer to find out which centre they cover. Steer clear of the Well Woman I had a really bad experience with them they are dangerously incompetent and I am happy to stand over that statement.

    Hey "dopey girl"

The same happened me recently. I had my first smear test, only to get a phone call from my doctor to say the results were abnormal. I was completely distraught over it, and went into the doctor where she told me I was cin2.

I decided to go private as I didnt want to wait around. I saw a guy on SCR, he was fantastic. He explained every little detail to me and then went ahead with the coloscopy. It was over before I knew it and I'm perfectly healthy.

Its easy for everyone to say 'not to worry', but I'm sure you will be fine. The doctor is just being extra cautious. Hope it goes ok for you. :)

    Hi Dopey Girl,
God, it feels wrong addressing you that way............
I have no experience myself of abnormal smear results but I just wanted to post and wish you all the best.
Like all the others have said, try not to think the worst and I'm sure you will be fine.
    Thinking of you
    Fluffy.....

I had this a few years ago, went for a LLETZ procedure and everything's been fine since, no abnormal smears. The procedure is quick and simple enough, they give you a local anaesthetic. Not the most pleasurable way to spend your afternoon but not awful either.

Hi, I just had my 1st smear test last Friday even though Im 27 and it hurt like hell... I had 2 have it done 3 times aswell as have an internal cos the Dr couldnt get a swab. The pain was so bad but the Dr wasnt rough @ all. Is this normal or was I just unlucky....

It shouldnt really be painful, well I never found them painful just very slightly uncomfortable. You may have been too nervous, since it was your first time having it done you may have been too tense down there and not allowed too-wide an opening for them to get a swab.

I had cin 2 and 3. I had a colposcopy (quite painful). Have had 2 clear smear test results and am waiting on my 3rd one.

Try not to worry too much.

    Hi OP,

Please dont worry too much! CIN 1 2 and 3 are terms used to refer to PRE- cancerous changes detected in the cervical epithelia! It does not mean you have cancer!!!!! The fact that these pre cancerous changes have been detected means that you will undergo any treatment necessary (colposcopy in this case) and following that, you will then be monitored by continuous and more frequent cervical smears! The reason why it is recommended that women go for cervical smears every three years, is that it is possible to miss these pre cancerous changes due to the small amount of cells removed during each smear! The chances of detecting any abnormal cells present are greatly increased if a woman attends her scheduled cervical smear every 3 years. It is recommended that once a woman is over 21 years of age, or sexually active (or both) she gets a cervical smear done! You have done right by getting your cervical smear done, ;)and the fact that these abnormalities have been detected before they become anything more sinister, is great news! Do not worry too much!!! :)
