Does anyone know of any good cycling routes near Portumna?
If so, what are they? :)

    thanks

You could do a circuit of lough derg, from portumna to Mount Shannon, Scarriff on the R352, this would be a reasonably busy road. Tuamgraney, Killaloe, ballina, portroe, ...terryglass and back to portumna. It would be a fine spin, maybe 80 miles or so.

Another spin would be to Woodford then up by lough Atorick and down by Scariff and back to Portumna, or from woodford to ballinakill then towards Gort, then take a left and come over the hill towards Scariff or Mt Shannon.

maybe another spin would be from Port towards Birr then take a right and loop back to Portumna via the nenagh road.

I have fone a small bit of cycling in that area and have driven the roads a bit.
have a look at a good road map and see what you like the look of.

    enjoy

    Hi,

You can find details of some cycle routes here: http://www.discoverloughderg.ie/LandActivities/Cycling/LoughDergCycleway/ although the links to maps do not seem to work.

If it's mountain biking you are interested in, there are a number of routes within Portumna Forest Park. You can find details of them here: http://www.coillteoutdoors.ie/index.php?id=53&rec_site=115&no_cache=1

There are also signposts in the town with directions for a cycle route going towards Ballinasloe but i don't actually know where it goes to / comes from. There is no name on the signs - just a bicycle symbol and a logo.
