Swapping Fork Issues

    Im currently half way through replacing a suspension fork with a solid fork. I'm using the following link as a guide to doing it;

    http://www.mountain-bike-world.com/mountain-bike-forks.html

    I cant get "crown" (see step 4 in the link) off the original fork and a trip to a bike shop was no help either as they claimed they had never seen one before.

    Im wondering is possible to just to leave this part out? Is it really necessary?

    Yes its pretty important, the crown race is where the bearings sit, I'm guessing its a cartridge bearing on your fork.

    Anywho, you really need a proper tool, specifically a crown race puller to avoid damaging the part.

    Not much of a bikeshop if they have never seen one before, try a better one.

    Cheers,

    Not the response I was looking for, I was hoping to do this all myself. I'll probably just bring it all somewhere next week. I wasn't looking forward to cutting the tube off the fork to size either.

    Is there any places you would recommend to finish the job?

    If you are in Dublin then Joe Daly cycles in dundrum, Cycle Superstore in tallaght. There are more in the wiki I believe.

    cutting the tube is easy enough, if you can install everything beforehand then measure the point you want to cut. Remove the fork and mark 3mm below this line as the final cut line (stem should overlap the end of the fork).

    Cut it with a 24 TPI + hacksaw and file off the burr that you are left with.

    :confused: Are you sure that was a bike shop?

    The crown-race (to give it it's proper name) will usually be tight fit. Take a bit of time removing it to avoid damage. Gently tap it all the way around to slide it down the steerer tube. It'll only move a tiny bit at first, but then get easier.

    Any normal bike shop should be able to do the job for you.
