Media Hysteria About "Deficits" and "Shortfalls"

Has anyone here ever heard any horror stories of Allowance/Benefit applicants never getting their money?? I feel it is only a matter of time before we see legitimate claimants being turned down.

I know the receipt of the money is not a fundamental human right or anything, but the truth of the matter is that there are criterion laid down for both assistance and benefit, and most people must come pretty close to satisfying them most of the time.

I want to work. I just dont want to wither my hands into dust scrabbling as a skivvy anymore for a wage which, less travel and food, comes out at barely any more than the dole, when I have a 3rd level qualification and just want the chance to put it to some use. I want the breathing space to be able to afford travel, a decent bite and a clean suit, while I get myself into a position to scrap for the jobs I trained to do in college. Sometimes this involves getting a few bob from the State. Sure, wont they just get it back off me later???

Still though, I cannot help but notice a constant, whirring, panic coming out of RTE radio every evening.

There is some auld gas-bag who does the Drivetime on RTE, 5-7pm, and every evening she is gassing on about the "deficit".....always asking whatever "eminent economist" that she has on about the "budget shortfall"...the "extra number of people signing on" etc etc etc.

Every evening, the same rubbish. Its as if they are trying to paint some picture of a noble minority, lead, naturally, by RTE, propping up a country teeming with hordes of "welfare recipients".

I think they have created an idea amongst feeble-minded folk that the whole system is about to come crashing down.

If the Dole can help me get qualified as a Barrister, surely then the taxes I pay in years to come can help other people out?

Is it a matter of time before this narrow mindedness translates into some sort of an official department policy of denying claims on whimsical grounds???

Is it possible that local offices in "unemployment blackspots" {another high-minded euphemism} are going to be set quotas?? So many get the dole this month and no more??? Is there any reason to think that this could not happen?

Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

It might help you get qualified but getting an actual job at the end of all your efforts is a different matter.

Well, I dont mind that too much. I am sure I can make €205 a week up in the Courts. Its not the money. I'm not after the money- the States, or anybody elses. Its about getting right, and getting sorted.
