Often in a folder called 'Plug-Ins' within the Daw software folder

There are other plugin protocols too, rtas, vst etc.

    Cheers lads sorted

One other thing, are plug-ins without an installer (dmg) file. As in if i download a certain plug-in will it work as long as its AU or VST..?

    Thanks

Usually when using a Mac plugins are downloaded as a .dmg (disk image).
This usually includes an installer which will place the plugin in the appropriate
place/folder depending on what it is. If the plugin does not have an installer then it must be placed manually the correct folder.

Different programs us different plugin formats.

RTAS is a Protools only format and will not work in Logic which is AU or
    Cubase which is VST.

Will VST no work in Logic anymore?

Nope. You can buy the FXpansion VST-AU Wrapper if you want to use VST
in Logic. Dont know how well it works though.

When you think of it AU is an Apple thing as is Logic. Apple are going to make it as awkward as possible to use anything else in Logic. At this point I dont think anything that is on VST isn't on AU except Steinberg plugins I think.
    I wonder why:confused:

Should do, and they don't necessarily have to have an extension (ie. .vst filename) AFAIK.
