procedure for vehicle cert and tax for car

    i'm picking up y new (well new to me car) on tuesday. Does the dealer send the cert off to shannon and i get it from them in a few weeks?

    the tax is also up at the end of this month. will i have to wait until i get the cert back to tax it? will i have to tax it for the first time in the motor tax office or will i be able to do it online?

    Yes the dealer will get you to fill in the change of ownership section of the old Vehicle Registration Cert and post it off to the DOE in Shannon. It takes on average about 3 weeks before they will post you out a new Vehicle Registration Cert with you as the new owner. You can then go into your local Motor Tax office and pay for your tax. They will issue your new tax disc there and then.

    In the mean time it is wise to carry around the receipt of purchase from the garage as proof you purchased the car recently and are awaiting the new VRC, in the event you are stopped at a Garda checkpoint.
