    Hey!

I do a bit of home recording, I am a guitarist / experimental bass player.

I use a toneport (Line 6), ableton live, ez drummer, and many many other vst's / vsti's.

It completely depends on what you want to do. If you are comfortable using cubase maybe stick to it, but Ableton is amazing, built in instruments I wouldn't use but with the vst's you can get you don't need them.

The recording process is easy and straight forward. With the toneport you can get a free version of ableton, you also get podfarm which has a great selection of tones to chose from,

    Hope this helps:)

    I use a Line 6 XT Live.

theres a USB post and it plugs straight into your computer, then download reaper and record straight away! great piece of kit!

i recorded my tracks with the line 6 toneport ux2. I purchased the metal & fx junky expansion packs for heavier tones and crazy effects at hand. www.myspace.com/baldyfrenchfcuk

    I recommend.

One more option for you to consider:

    Sonar 8

    Thomann.de

It can be had for less than Cubase and it's better IMO. Widely used in the States, not so popular in Europe which is a shame. Excellent piece of software.

If you can get ure hands on a Roland VS-1824, Amazing bit of kit, easy to use, full of deadly ****. I'm recordin an album on one at the minute, check out www.myspace.com/eternalfaithmetal to hear the sound quality. don't listen to the songs listen to the sound. it also works well with almost all other systems in my experience.

    Hope this helps.

Hey I am in a similar boat to the OP. I'm totally cluless when it comes to recording/sound engineering/ anything musical that invloves wires!

Want to record some stuff this summer, mainly just acoustic guitar and vocals, but would probably want to add in at least one other vocal track, maybe some keyboard/harmonica as well.

What kind of prices are we talking about with this line 6 thing? And is it easy to use, how does it work do you hook it up to a computer or...? Also what would you need in terms of a mic? I've got one decent mic/mic stand, i suppose i would need another if i wanted to record guitar and vocals simultaneously...

Sorry for all the questions, I'm a complete noob. I've been procrastinating on this for ages, really wanna get something recorded finally

    Roland VS2480, except no substitute!
But seriously if you want to learn the art of recording this machine is great. Computer based systems are too unrelyable unless you use protools hd or something similar. The VS range can be picked up quite cheap nowadays and have all the tools you'll need to make really high end recordings and learn your trade at the same time.
    Hope this helps.

    Exciting times ahead, enjoy it

Find an old comp and wipe it and get a good soundcard and you wont look back... computers can do things siab's will never do. you can even get free plugins... etc...

If you mic a good guitar amp you will get a sound a bazillion times better than any line 6 product haha

Go that way if you're serious about it anyway otherwise try the siab or line 6

Is there any easier software to use with the Line 6 UX2 than the Ableton software that comes with. My soundcard isn't doing it's best these days (less than 2 year old Dell!!) and the friend I saw using the Line 6 had a Mac and used Garage Band, which is so easy. Any PC equivalent.

I'm going to have to get in touch with Dell BTW about the soundcard cause it skips when watching movies and when recording it messes up the tracks syching right and gives a delay even though it was recorded in perfect timing. Sickened, can't get to use the thing properly yet.

Hey anyone know of what sort of equipment id need for recording piano. would i have to splash out on a pricey microphone cause i really don't have much cash...?

For a while there I thought nobody was gonna vote for the PC which to my mind is the ultimate recording studio tool - not so expensive either these days too.

An old pc for 300-400 should do. A copy of Adobe Audition. An Echo Audio sound card. A CD/DVD burner. And hey presto you have a top of the line digital recording studio on a shoe string.

is it possible to get a PA with build in hard drive and multi track recording features?
maybe that Roland VS2480 can be used as a PA for live gigs also??
