I was there last year for two weeks and it's a beautiful country. The crime and all that is well documented but we didn't have any trouble at all and just followed the advice of our guide books and locals with regard safery.

I'd highly recommend SA but it will be the middle of their winter in June so I'm not sure if it's going to be what your looking for.

There's some great places in Europe other than Spain, Croatia is beaufitul for one and Sardinia too.

I was in South Africa just over two weeks ago and it was amazing, I'd definitely recommend it (and look forward to going back). I spent more time on the Cape Town side of the country, rented a car and a GPS and drove around - felt perfectly safe at all times and had no problems while there. I spent less time on the Jo'burg side of the country and had family showing me around, so I didn't get quite as good a feel for how safe or unsafe things really are there, but again, everything went perfectly fine.

I also got to visit Kruger park which would be an essential stop if you've never been to SA. IMO, it's a great holiday destination and if you use some common sense (plenty of threads here with tips from people who have lived/still live in SA too), you'll be perfectly safe.

S.A. is a great holiday destination.

If you are worried about it being winter, then go to the Eastern Transvaal - lots to do there, and you could take in Durban too.

All depends on what you want out of a holiday.

The Western Cape would be goos too - yes, it will be the start of winter, but it won't be sooooo cold.

why not the east coast of Africa like kenya, zanzibar, tanzania? great beaches, great resorts and you can always add a 2 or 3 day safari for a bit of a change

Just an FYI if you are planning to hit SA this June - Lions Tour is on June/July so prices will be fairly high I'd imagine around that time, so perhaps look at the dates! :)

I'd definitely recommend it, weather in Cape Town will be pretty poor during the summer but the weather along the Durban coast/St. Lucia and Mpumulanga/Transvaal will be pretty warm and comfortable. I backpacked there last year and I found it perfectly safe, Kruger park is great too to spend a couple of days.
