Possible miscarriage

I posted in The Ladies Lounge as I'm not sure where this is supposed to be. The thread was closed, why I don't know, but I have a quick question I need answered. I'm not looking for medical advice but I am looking for an idea of other posters previous experiences if they have any.

I think I may be having, or had, a miscarriage in the last few days. I didn't know I might have been pregnant to start with.
Anyway I have an appointment with my doctor & I want to know is there a specific test/ scan she can do to give a definate yes or no answer as to whether I miscarried or not?
I've never had anything like this happen so I just want a few pointers as to what the usual procedure is or what to expect.

The doctor will know what to do, and will advise you what she is doing.

I'm aware of that but I'd like an idea of what is facing me before I go to the surgery.

It was closed as it was too open to giving medical advice which for good reason is against the charter of this forum, the ladies lounge and indeed the site itself. Experiences of what you might expect is cool and hopefully you get some, but any medical advice from any poster and I'll be closing this thread too. Thanks

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Depending on when the possible miscarriage occurred there maybe still some traces of the hormone which is detected by a pregnancy test. the dr will ask about the date of your last period and may want to do an external exam of you pelvic region.

Your dr may refer you to a gyn for an ultrasound and check check to see the contents of your womb, sometimes if a woman miscarries the womb doesn't automatically clear it's self out and there is a small possibility that if you did miscarry that you may need a procedure to ensure that nothing remains inside you.

I know that thinking that is hard and so can be undergoing such a procedure but when it is needed and done it's done for the good of your health.

This is a hard time for any woman going through this, please get as much support and
help for yourself as you can.

Thanks for the advice. Apparently I did miscarry which I find hard to believe as I'm on the pill & never actually realised I was pregnant.
Anyway thanks again for giving me an idea of what to expect, it made it easier facing into the appointment because my GP isn't the friendliest.

I'm so sorry to hear your news. Can I just say that you don't necessarily need an op to deal with this. You can go the medically managed route which means you take a medication called Cytotec which starts the process of natural miscarriage. I had a natural miscarriage the first time and went the medically managed route the second... I could not bear the thought of a D&C.

Once you have passed what is horribly known at this stage as "the products of conception", and the bleeding has stopped, take a HPT 10 days afterwards .. if it's negative then it's unlikely there's anything more that needs to be done but if it's still positive, go to your doc and get a scan to see if there's anything else.

I just wanted you to know that a D&C isn't the only way to manage this and I do believe doctors talk about it like it's the only option.

I just so sorry you've had to go through this at all. PM me if you need to talk about it.

My experience was that when I was about 7 weeks pregnant (had only found out the week before), I started to bleed like a heavy period (not spotting). I saw my gynecologist and she did a vaginal ultrasound which confirmed that the pregnancy had ended. They also took blood and urine samples. Because it was at a very early stage of pregnancy, I was told to just wait for it to bleed out. She said the bleeding could go on longer than you'd be used to with your period, maybe up to a couple of weeks, but in fact in my case it only took about a week. I had a followup appointment a couple of weeks later just to check that everything was fine, but I didn't need any medical or surgical intervention. I did feel rather exhausted for a while and my hormones were a bit haywire but my period returned as normal the next month.

It's probably a sort of double shock if you weren't trying to get pregnant so it must be quite confusing and worrying for you. Do try and take the time to ask your doctor everything you need to. Would you consider going to a different doctor if you don't find your usual one very sympathetic?

My experience was similar to the post above but like the op i didnt know i was pregnant at the time (around 6 weeks). I didnt need any surgical intervention besides tablets to stop the bleeding eventually after almost 4 weeks. Without being crude, i was losing so much blood that it would gush to my knees and at night i would wake up in a pool of it. (i only say this because apparently it is unusual but it can happen, it doesnt mean there is something really wrong just no-one told me at the time:() I found the whole experience really frightening and thought at one stage, that i would never conceive again. I didnt know what was going on with me. The doctor wasnt very supportive at all. The tablets (some kind of clotting) worked after about 1 week but it did take me some time to recover and i found it really hard physically. None of my friends had experienced a miscarriage at that stage so i didnt have anyone to talk to about it. Its so important to mind yourself as it can take alot out of you.

I have since had a daughter who is almost 7 so it didnt mean that i couldnt carry a child. I just deal with it, by thinking that it was just cells that didnt form properly. It wasn't a baby. I am sorry you are going through it and i wish you well...

I think the same thing is happening to me. I'm on the pill (and have been for years) but I started bleeding 1 week in to a new packet. I stopped taking pill after a week of bleeding hoping, stupidly, that it would stop, but it's still going but not as heavy. I've been putting off going to the doctor because I've been afraid- of him saying it's nothing and of him saying that there's something wrong. The more I think about it the more I think it could be a miscarriage from an unknown pregnancy.

After reading this I think I will go and see doc tonight, I don't want to end up causing myself long term harm.

Point of this post- thanks to PI for helping others other than the OP! :)

If you were pregnant, you would still have the pregnancy hormone in your system, they can tell by that by testing your urine or blood. they may send you for a scan and a D&C if you have had a misscarraige
