Just finished watching the series for the second time and I was talking to a mate about favourite characters and he seemed to like completely different ones to me. But I suppose that's just another great thing about the Wire. So who's been your favourite characters over the series?

For me Bodie, always funny, straight with everyone including Stringer, police etc and had a heart,
I was freaked when he got killed
. Frank Sobotka as well, you could always see he was doing what he had to do but never enjoyed it. And Omar, just a great character with great scenes and great lines.

Stringer Bell and Omar for me. I loved how Stringer tried to bring economic theory and corporate business methods to the world of drug dealing. The scene where he sets up a print shop and has to explain to the gang members that there is no criminal angle to it...classic. Sitting in the back of his escalade with blacked out windows talking to 2 hit men about market saturation when they clearly havent a clue what he is talking about. The actor (name escapes me) had a fantastic presence also which added an extra layer to the character.

Omar for being such an unusual character, intelligent, cunning... "We all part of the same game"

Marlo Stansfield for his minimal style which produced an imposing character who was clever enough to see through Stringer.

Also worth a mention: Mcnulty and Bunk

Omar, Bodie, Herc and Carver, Bunk.

Omar - you come at the king you best not miss.

    Bubbles - obliged McNutty.

Has to be Stringer for me, same reasons as above. Michael was also quite a good character.

@ Slim Charles. It's been a while since I watched it but
Didn't both Avon and Stringer set each other up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,748 ✭✭✭tony1kenobi

    Bunk for me....

I love Omar though.....especially when he goes out the 3rd/4th floor window and Marlo says "that's Spiderman sh1t"...or similar.

    Yep, you are correct.

Regarding good characters, crazy ol' Bunny Colvin gets overlooked a lot, but he was brilliant in seasons 3 and 4. I love his comment early in season 3 when he 'jokingly' says
    "I'm going to legalise drugs"
    . A very good scene.

    Definitely Bunk. He's a legend.

    McNulty: The greeks invented civilisation.

Bunk: They invented Ass ****in' too.

    Pure genius.

Just finished watching Season 5. I think my favourite police is Lester Freamon, favourite gangster - Omar. We should perhaps put a poll up on this?

Omar - just an overall legend! Bunk and Lester in terms of cops. Bunk is hilarious and Lester is a type of person I'd like to know in real life. Really liked Wallace too. And I admired Frank Sobotka and what he was trying to do in S.2.

Clay davis was the ultimate head wrecker!, i liked the Herc and Carver dynamic when they were together in earlierr seasons, on the other side, i also thought the Barksdale crew in earlier seasons were deeper and more accessible than Marlos crew, although Marlo's crew had that whole silent-dont-mess-with-us dynamic going on.

Brother Mouzone deserves a dishonourable mention, thought he was somewhat a caricature of himself, was glad to see the back of him tbh

    Bunk is definitely up there..

" Im just a black mutha**** with a big d***!"
    Classic line.

    Omar was brilliant as well.

    worst character.. Valchek.

    Snoop from Marlos crew.
I couldnt understand why they kept refering to her as she/her etc.

Just finished watching at the weekend; overall memoral character for me was Bubbles... he uses a few classic lines when talking to the cops. But the one where he is describing what type of guy Johnny is: "the laziest white boy ever to sit between two shoes" had me laughing my ass off.

Why was carver's face so fat in the 5th series, was he ill and had to take steroids maybe?

Mr Presbo really grew on me

    Cant say i noticed that.

    Stringer Bell
    Omar
    Bunk
    Bodie
    Slim

Weirdly enough..... for a show which was my absolute favourite of all time, I actually really disliked the main character. McNulty just got under my skin. Something about his accent and the way he walked.

I noticed that after reading your post. Especially in the scene with Herc outside the station in Season 5 when
Herc gives him Marlos mobile phone number.

Obviously there are a number of excellent characters on the Wire, but there are a few stand-outs.

Slim Charles is an intelligent man that manages to navigate the change from Barksdale to Marlo with. He has a natural ease which seems to garner respect effortlessly with only Bodie openly disrespecting him throughout.

Micheal is a pretty deep character for a teenager holding off on Namond, defending Dukie and his Bug, and entering the Game only when he is ready (he first resists Marlo's advances).

Nick Sobotka is one of the few well-rounded working class characters ever presented on television trying to 'remain' Polish/white in a city where his people are forgotten or plain ignored.

Sergei "Serge" Malatov: Did he have hands? Did he have a face? Yes?... then it wasn't us *laughs*... idio

+1 I thought in the last series he became a parody of his cheeky self, pushing things too far

Agree pretty much on all counts. I love Slim Charles. Great character, very understated.

I know what you're saying about Nick, but I preferred Frank Sobotka. He was corrupt, but unselfishly. He did what he had to do for those he felt responsible for

Has to be Bubbles. he has a journey, he grows, while never losing his sense of humour. Bubbles is a fighter, he fights his addiction while others succomb.

Also, Omar, Bunk, and Pres, who also undergoes a kind of change, we can see him develop over the five seasons from a f*ck up to a committed, able teacher.

And the mayor's assissant, can't remember his name. Has some good one liners, a dry wit.

    Liked:
    Herc and Carver
    Omar
    Ziggy
    Snoop
    Bunk
    Bubbles and Johnny
    Poot

    Disliked:
Kima - liked her initially but she became annoying in the later series
Kenard - cheeky little bollix, I was glad anytime he got a few slaps

    Cheese

    I hated cheese the most

The Bunk, Slim Charles, Omar and Prop Joe. I actually though Jay Landsman was funny too, very underused. His grub always looked good and had a quality porno stash.

Didn't realise Snoop was a girl till late on. Am I the only one? Plus, anyone else thing that Valchek looks like an older Bob Kelso from Scrubs or have I lost the plot?

(consistently) liked; Omar, bodie, Bubbles, Michael, Randy, Denis and Dukie
(began to) like; Snoop, Presbo, Stringer, Bunk, Herc and Namond
    (consistently) hated; Marlow!
(began to hate); McNulty... GRRRRRR! he just got so fricking annoying!!!! Especially in series 5 when his imagination gets the best of him, but a machiavellian character all the same.

Easily the best thing to ever happen to tv!

"A Man gotta have a code!"

lordy, it's a tough job picking your favourite characters from a show with so many brilliant characters. But most memorable for me were (in no particular order)

    Omar Little
    Snoop
    Tommy Carcetti
    Lestor Fremon
    Namond Bryce
    Bunny Colvin
    Ziggy Sobotka
    Nicky Sobotka
    Marlo Stanfield
The Bunk -The "lie detector" test on a suspect at start of season 5 was hilarious
    Cedric Daniels

I didn't like Bodie over the scene with
Wallace, because of the way he tried to justify what he was doing, I guess to help his conscious, Poot didn't try to pretend anything so I didn't dislike him as much over the same incident.

    I hated cheese the most

I know he turned out to be a prick near the end of the show but he was funny as **** with ziggy and some of his lines were unreal.

'He had this one girl pullin guns out of her pussy that **** was unseemly'

'Incursions? arn't you the articulate mofuccka'

just finished season 3, by far my favourite character has been Cutty. very suprised he hasnt been mentioned yet. Thought his story as a sub-plot to overall series was amazing.

asides from him, Bubbs & Bunk

Funny that Prop Joe hardly gets a mention here:

"Proposition fall kindly on your ears."

Of the gangsters, favourite has to be Omar.

    Of the police, Lester.

People, why am I not feeling the love for McNulty ? The guy is a legend.

Bunk and Freamon are great characters and Mr Prezbo really grows on you.

Another great character that I loved was Bill Rawls.

On the other side of fence:

    Omar !!
    Stringer
    Prop Joe
    Snoop

Omar was my favourite character, a bit of Robin Hood. I loved the contradiction that he was d baddest man in West Baltimore but also a homosexual. And that scar down his face was pure gangsta.

Closely followed by Omar, McNutty, Stringer, Avon, Bunk and Cutty.
