Hi, my friends Dell laptop has died and he ask me to back up his files from the hard drive. I have an external case for a 2.5 drive but the dell hard drive does not seem to fit, can I get an adapter for this hard drive to connect it to the external case and remove the files ?

It is a dell Inspiron, the hard drive is at the side just like the cd rom, any advice is greatly appreciated.

You have the wrong caddy, there is currently two types of 2 1/2" hdds on the market, SATA and IDE. IDE being the type fitted to older machines. You will have to buy the correct caddy for the drive you need.

on my dell the hd was in a steel, cage, i had to remove the hd from the cage, open 4 screws ,to get it into a caddy, google sata interface pic 2.5 .SATA S ABOUT 1inch wide 2 black interfaces ,2.5inch ide is 3 times wider, has 30 pins approx.GOOGle 2.5 ide interface hd for more info.ide 2.5 takes up 95percent of the hd back ,sata about 40per cent.don,t lose the 4 screws ,you, need em to put the hd back inside the laptop.

If its SATA and you have a sata motherboard you can just connect it directly to your computer as the connectors are the same.
