My dh was self-employed for a year or so (he was working for a shady individual and really didn't understand what it entailed long long story ) as far as i knew it all was sorted but alas when looking into other tax issues i was told we were due a rebate but not until my dh submitted his returns or something for that period (2003-2004)
he as usual has buried his head in the sand and i don't know where to start should i look for an accountant - i have some bank statements and invoices!!
also how would i look for a good accountant who won't rip us off money is very tight but i want to get it sorted

    Hi Giz

It may be too late to cleim any refund as the 2003/04 period has fallen beyond the 4 year time limit which is allowed for assessment

    Hope this helps

    Hi Gizc,
I have come across this situation before, I am you have two choices
    1) Accept that your other half was self employed & hire an accountant to work out your tax liability for VAT, Income tax, PRSI etc. for the years he was with working for your man.

    2) Or fight the case and say you were an employee of your man, thus all payments he made to you was net of PRSI & Tax. But you would have to hire a solicitor about it.

You may want to talk NERA or Citizens Advice Bureau about the details of your case first before approaching an accountant / solicitor.

I will pm you with my contact details if you would like more help.

thanks for all the replies and pm's .
Swanvill we know going the legal route would be a nightmare so we feel going the accountant route is the right thing to do, we must pull out all the bits and poeces from those years and get a proper idea of the money that came in etc....
its a nightmare but we need to face it, does anyone konw would we be able to come to an agreement with revenue to pay back the money over time ??? cause we really don't have any free income.

    Hi Gizc,

The Revenue will allow a phased payment, the key is to communicate with the Revenue about your difficulties, establish the level of taxes owed and work out a repayment schedule. Once you have agreed a schedule with the Revenue YOU MUST stick to it, if you don't deliver on your promise you're screwed.

Here is a link about tax payment difficulties from the Revenue website.
