Rimfire for shorter range hunting out to 110m and centerfire for everything else

    BUT I will be corrected won't I

would a rimfire do for rabbit control so it would?

The rimfire is perfect for rabbit control, it is accurate and has plenty of power for rabbits, crows etc. It is also cheap to run compared to centerfire which for hunting rounds are going to cost upwards of €1.25 a pop. If you need occasional fox control maybe .22wrm would be a good choice.

iv heard people on here talking about .17 rifles i dont know much about shooting but i assume this is a smaller cal. rifle but from what i can gather on boards it sounds like a longer range rifle. can someone clear this up for me?

That would be a 17 Hmr and you are right in a way that its a smaller round than a .22 lr and it is more effective at longer ranges than a .22 lr. Have a look here at a previous thread.

I have one great little round for rabbits out to about 150 yards, have taken the odd fox with it as well but and I stress you have to know your shot placement and be within suitable distance. I would not take a shot past 80 yards max.

OH! the eternal quest for one rifle to do it all

    the answer is :

    1. .177 air rifle for crows etc. out of the tree, in the barn and good fun on rats too.

    1. .22lr for rabbits and the occasional close range fox (subs and HV)

    1. .223rem or .204(OK Bunny) for foxes out further or a .243 for fox and deer.

so you see you only need 1 rifle (in each cal.)

sorry but it is as it is !;)

    agree 100% ;) except I'd have .204 Ruger before .223 Rem. in the sentence :):) and that's despite the fact I now shoot a .220 Swift :(

    abbreviations for certain ammo

"wrm" or "wmr" is .22 Magnum (originally know as winchester rimfire magnum or usually nowadays known as winchester magnum rimfire)

"hmr" is .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire

Here's a trick to use for using images from the Internet. If you right click on any image and click on properties you can see where the image is stored/located.

Now just hi-lite the images location text and right click to copy. Now in your reply to a post click on the 'image icon' and paste the image location text of the image that you copied. I'll put this in the tips section as well.

But remember if the image is removed at any time then that image will not show in the post.

This is known as 'hotlinking', and while it works exactly as described, it's generally considered to be bad form and poor Netiquette.

We ask/ed questions and learn/ed, same as you.

Only thing is I learned most of what I now know the hard way :(

    Since I found here it's a lot easier :)

Pajero it's hard to do it alone if there's a range near you maybe think about joining up. Or even a gun club that allows rifles to shoot over the land. It's good to be out and about with like minded people.

I've got one Pajero. Its in .223 with a 24" barrel, with a T8 on the end of it.

    For....

    Its got a smooth trigger,
    Its got a smooth bolt,
    Its got a 1 in 8 twist,
    Its pre threaded
    Its accurate

    Against.....

The stock is a bit plasticky
There's a recess behind the trigger guard which is annoying
    Its a long action
    Its got a 1 in 8 twist!!
It is heavy when you kit it out with a can, bipod, scope, and Lightforce Striker Lamp.
Price - The Super Varmint is the same except its stainless and is unthreaded but is cheaper. Super Varmint has more calibres.

The twist rate is something which a lot of lads freak out about. Mine will shoot 1 to 1.25" groups at 100yds with the 50gr American eagle Hollow points all day. This is good enough for MoF (Minute of Fox). If I use the Federal 40gr Ballistic tip, My groups will reduce to 1/2 to 3/4". Out to 200yds, the American Eagle kills as good as the rest of them, so I use these. I've got an awful lot of small fields in my permission, so a .223 with AE 50gr HP's is a good combination, I've no need for a swift.

Mine will peg the heavier .223 ammo into tighter groups again, Its just that I prefer using the lighter stuff.

A mate of mine got a very good deal on one - 20" barrel, T8 and safe for abouy 2k in the outpost in Baltinglass.

Other than that, you're looking at around 1650 for the rifle in other shops

    Centerfire and Rimfire Ammunition
    ammoriflehandguncartrid.gif
Centerfire ammunition is used for rifles, shotguns, and handguns. In this type of ammunition, the primer is located in the center of the casing base. Most centerfire ammunition is reloadable.

Rimfire ammunition has the primer contained in the rim of the ammunition casing. Rimfire ammunition is limited to low-pressure loads. Rimfire cartridges are not reloadable.

    Thanks a mill Jonty,

As I said I have done a bit of research on the Tikka, but its good to hear from someone who has actually been on the business end of one. (apart from the guys paid to write GREAT things about them in hunting/shooting mags)

I too have alot of small fields in my permission at the moment, albeit only shooting a .22wmr but have the option of shooting fox on same land with .223 so i'm glad to hear its an option with
    American eagle Hollow points.

I was foolish enough to rush into buying my first two guns (.22lr and then traded for .22wmr) without really doing the research on them and don't want to make the same mistake again!! So you're reply/opinion is much appreciated

    Happy hunting.

    P.S.
What do you mean by MoF or minute of fox?

    P.P.S
Can the Super Varmint be fitted with a T8?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Jonty

By MoF or Minute of Fox I'm pi$$ taking,

Have you heard the expression MOA or Minute of Angle? This means that at 100yds the rifle is cabaple of a 1" group, 200 yards a 2" group and so on. Such a rifle is said to shoot 1 MOA. 2" at 100yds, 4" at 200yds is said to be a 2MOA rifle.

By MoF or Minute of Fox I'm saying that the rifle is accurate enough to shoot foxes, as they are a relatively big enough target ie killzone greater than 1".

Yes the Super Varmint can be fitted with a T8 provided the muzzle has been threaded. This will cost in the region of €100.

    Jonty

    Fantastic looking gun.... nice pics......
can you tell us more about it please?

The gun/rifle is a 'vierling' four barreled gun, they are not too uncommon in Germany, more usual is the driling (drilling) or three barreled gun. All these fall under the heading of 'if you have to ask the price
'. The really cute thing is that you can get sub-caliber inserts for the barrels to fire for instance .30 carbine or .32 acp from the .308 or 30/06, or how about .22lr from the hornet barrel. So all you guys out there if you really want to wind up your F.O. and you have a few quid spare:D:D:D

Just to let you know I had a few shots of the T3 Hunter in .223 last night. Tiny groups at 120m, which for me is a first!! It is fantastic, so cant wait to get my mitts on one of the T3 range. Not too sure which one yet. Thanks again for the feedback.
