I was in music maker and I was shown a PDP FX kit (Birch) and I was wondering what kind of kit is it compared to the likes of Pearl, Tama etc...
I`ll be playing metal but I`ve had Pearl before so i was hoping to stay with Pearl but they dont sell Pearl for some reason. Just want some feed back about PDP kits, good, bad, good for this kind of music????
Any feed back would be cool, cheers.

I hear they're pretty good but the hardware is a bit crap. For the same kind of money though, you should check out the new Pearl Vision series, seemingly a much better kit altogether.

Be aware of shell sizes though, the Fusion sized kits are usually 10", 12" and 14" toms, traditionally for rock you'd use larger shells for a deeper tone.

As for the music I`ll be playing would the Vision series be the job?
I want to stick with pearl but not sure which series would be right for me, I want durability, quality for an affordable price.

Both kits have alot going for them.

Ive heard the Maple PDP is better than the Birch but its all up to personal taste.

The Peal comes in VBX and VMX (as far as i can remember), B for Birch / M for Maple.

    Whats your budget ?

Well I`d say about 2-2,500, I was dealing with Thomann and I was going for the VBX series and first what I wanted came out at 3350, then I trimmed the kit down and it was 2500 ish

For €2500 you should be looking at DW or Pearl Masters :D

You'll pick up a Vision or PDP kit for a grand, easily. As for which, just try them both, see what sounds best to you.

If I went with masters for what I want I need to win the lotto and I dont think DW would be the kit for me, not many metal drummers use them, I think I`ll have to start small and work my way up, last time I bought my kit I got everything at once and the price was good, well in pounds it was totally different now...

With €2,500 you would be able to get one of each in all honesty.

You could get a Pearl Master Rock sizes for €2,444.

PDP is made by DW, one thing you could look at when you get either kit is getting Remo EMPEROR skins. Alot of metal drummers use them, will give you the metal sound you are looking for.

** EDIT ** You could also look at Taye drums, you could get a Taye 6 Peice for about €1550.00 ?

Ah, you didn't say you needed cymbals too :D

Go into talk to Ro in the drum dept in x-music, he'd probably cut you a deal since you're buying so much and, his advice would be spot on too.

    Oh yeah starting from scratch..

You should be able to get a deal for a full complete kit but probably not from Thomann. Your average Metal band uses a 22" bass drum, the 20" one you've selected might be a little lightweight. You need to hear the difference yourself. Seriously, give Ro a shout, he's a gent.

robert B? Thats ment to be a 22 not 20, sorry

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

No idea what his full name is, just know him as Ro. I imagine he's the only one in the drum dept there :D

You should aim a bit higher than B8's on that budget too, they're horrible yokes. The XS20 ones sound ok to the ear but actually pretty nice recorded. The AA and up are sweet. You're in a good position because you're spending quite a lot of money, you have a bit of leverage here to play ball and get a deal.

Thats the kinda feed back I like, I didnt know which ones to go for, I used the B8 pro`s on me last kit and I thought they were good, but I mean if there`s no real big price difference I`d go for the AA`S,I`m gonna start out with a basic cymbal set up like 16" crash/18" crash/20" ride and hi-hats and if I could get them on AA`s I`d be sailling...then just build up from there.
I was talking with a lad called robert there today and he was sound as a bell, what he there Pearl wise was`nt much and I was`nt really eager to get the PDP kit, looked lovely tough.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Ah right. Try Ro in x-music, they had a good few Pearl sets last time I was out there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭lewis

It's a new place out near the red cow roundabout. There are loads of threads about them here.

    Drums Drums Drums

Your best bet is to go into a local retailer and have a look at the stuff on offer. X-music (near the red cow), Music Maker (exchequer street), Naas Drum Centre, are all reputable dealers.

Alot of people talking about the Pearl Visions. These are the replacement to the popular export series (now discontinued).

PDP is a DW brand. I can vouch for the PDP build quality and hardware (all made by DW and rock solid). I actually use a PDP Maple kit for gigging and the tom sizes are considered "Fusion" sizes but adjust well to all styles of music.

Plenty of drummers to ramble on about this type of thing on drummingireland.com

Well I went into Naas Drum Centre, which I`never knew was even there, I`m in Kildare, anyways, its a very good place, better set up than Music Maker.
Here`s the offer I got.....see what you all think....

    Pearl Vision (Tribal) 6 pce

    1 front rack/w 3 cymbal stands, 2 tom tom clamps /

DW 5000 double bass pedal /

    Sabian cymbal pk xs20`s

    all for €2015

dw 5000 pedal a good pedal?

XS20 a good cymbal to go for?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

I think if your spending that kind of money of a kit, you should be looking at a higher grade of cymbals. The XS20's are grand for what they are, but if i were you i would be looking at something along the lines of Sabian's AA range.

Maybe Lose the rack for the time being, and spend the extra few bob on better cymbals? I'd be looking to get the basics right, beofre i forked out on a rack.

    Just my opinion.

When i bought my current kit, i only spent €600 on it (Mapex M series) and i spent around €800 on cymbals (Sabian AAX's). I think its easier to better the sound from a cheaper grade drum kit, (upgrade heads for a start) than it is to better a sound from a cheaper cymbal.

    Each to their own tho!

BTW, the PDP kits are quite decent too.

I`m stuck for the space and I dont really want to have a load of cymbal legs poking out all over the place, at least with the rack I could go up tight against the walls.
I had said that to your man about the AA`s, but since I was trying to keep the price at an affordable one he recommended them one`s.
But I do want to get a kit thats gonna last me so you think the Vision is a good buy?
    Thanks for the input, man.
Its different I have to say, have`nt seen a kit simialar...
What kind of set-up do you have? Any pics?
