Kinda upset, just went online to buy something I wanted tomorrow, did my usual google.ie seach and up pops computerbits.ie, I thought the price was a little bit saucy so I done another seach and up comes up lindy.ie, Nice one, product in stock and the price was right....so I bought it...not until I paid did I realise the order was coming from the UK...

I think it's cheating a little that UK companys can just register an irish business name for a few euro and then get a .ie domain and thus appear as an irish business...

I wanted to keep the money in the country but I feel kinda duped and now there's no way i'm going to have it tomorrow..

Does this annoy anyone else....shoud the pratice be outlawed...

Should Capitalism be outlawed? I think that's one for the politics forum.

Do you assume that Tesco is an Irish company because it had tesco Ireland on it's logo here.

Tesco employs people here and contributes to the the economy, these UK websites using a .ie domain do not...that's the difference...

.ie to me says guranteed Irish....

I always thought they were Irish, so poked around the website for clues.

There's an address: Teeling St., Tubbercurry, Co Sligo, also a Sligo fax and phone number. Doesn't seem to be a UK link...

They may have an Irish presence, but ship from a centralised depot (in the UK), this is common enough.

.ie doesn't guarantee Irish (dabs.ie, komplett.ie, skyireland.ie, etc), but in order to get a .ie domain you do need some kind of presence here. You don't need to be an Irish company, nor does all your stock have to be located here.

The company should state in their shipping T&Cs that they ship from the UK though, so you'd be aware of possible delays, etc.

This is all there is. If they ship from the UK, you'd expect the UK delivery time to be less than the Ireland one. Peculiar.

I've never bought from them - never had the right price for whatever I needed.

"ComputerBits.ie ship to Ireland the UK and all European countries"

"Usually if the items are in stock 5-7 days for Ireland, 7-9 Days for UK and 11-14 for mainland Europe."

What makes you think the order is coming from the UK?
The website is registered to a company called Up the Yard Ltd, in Sligo.

a friend of mine has a .co.uk site and sells into the UK from offices & warehouse in Portlaoise. He has an 0800 number in the UK and a UK postal address for returns (freight comapany's office in birmingham).

The only restrictions for a .ie address is that a company must show a connection with Ireland - selling into Ireland is good enough for this.

You don't even need that. €20 spent on registering a business name is all that's needed.

A bit of confusion here guys.
Computerbits.ie is an Irish business run out of Sligo (as outlined).
The OP advised that he believed he wasnt getting good value on their site and tried another site: lindy.ie
This is the site he is a bit annoyed about......as they appear to be based completely in England.

    Just clearing that up.

The issue doesnt really affect me.......

I assume if they have an .ie you are paying Irish VAT on the purchase so in a way you are keeping at least some of the money in Ireland

Misreading the label as mentioned. This is like falling for other meaningless marketing phrases, like "fresh", "new & improved", "state of the art", all just words.
so you think it's a good thing?? makes a mockery of the .ie domain as far as i'm concerned....
Nothing they can really do, just be more careful with the fine print in future, on everything.

This is not always the case. If companies do a over a certain amount of business they must pay Irish VAT, like pixmania or amazon have to. Smaller business do not have to. It is very common practise for Hong Kong sellers to pose as UK sellers on ebay. Also HMV.co.uk ship from jersey, now that is a much bigger issue. People thinking .co.uk will be shipped out of the EU and then it arrives from Jersey and you are liable to pay VAT & duty.

    http://www.domainregistry.ie/QuickGuideToRegistrations.php
IMPORTANT NOTE: All applicants applying for a .ie domain name who are not situated in the 32 counties of Ireland, must demonstrate a Real and Substantive Connection with Ireland (with the exception of those applying with a registered Community Trademark)

Examples of acceptable documentation demonstrating substantial trade or commercial activity within Ireland are as follows:

    * Copies of invoices (showing trade to or from Ireland)
    * High-quality brochures
    * A signed letter on headed paper from a bank manager, firm of chartered accountant(s), registered auditor(s), tax consultant(s) (where the tax advisor identification number is displayed), or solicitor(s) confirming the applicants trade with Ireland.
So there is no problem with any business getting a .ie

Getting a .ie is much easier than in the past so no longer the indication of bona fide that it used to be , main barrier to cyber squatters IMHO is the extortionate cost

For this site to get its domain name , DeVore changed the name of his business to boards.ie (or boards.ie ltd.) for a day so that he could get the domain.
