Hey guys, ok try to keep this simple! im on a gap year between school & college. I had been working in a retail store on a Christmas contract which i loved - the hours suited me down to the ground, always got my lunch break, min 11 hour break between shifts, time and a half on a sunday etc. Of course with the recession my contract wasnt renewed and since then i've been applying everywhere and didnt hear anything until 2 weeks ago when i had an interview for a hotel receptionist.
I got the job for the receptionist and started last week. I had worked as a hotel receptionist for the previous 3 summers so I knew the hours were gonna be 7.00 - 3.30 or else 3.00-11.30.
Due to the nature of this job back to back shifts are allowed as in i finish at 11.30 and can be back next morning at 7.00.
Also you get your break whenever a manager can cover it. So it could be 1 o clock before getting your lunch after being in since 7 or 9 at night after being in since 3.
We get food provided for us - or we are meant to. On saturday i went for my lunch & was told they were too busy to make me anything  we only get half an hour lunch so i didnt have time to go anywhere else to get anything.
Im working full time until the end aug and have been told that if i want weekend work in september thats fine.

Now my problem is the retail store i had worked in for christmas rang me and asked me would i consider coming back for the summer.
I'd really love to go back due to moe sociable hours, always get breaks, and the other factors i mentioned above!
    The only 2 things are:
Ive been told i'll get a min of 16 hours and max 35 - in my current job i'm getting min 35...
Also the contract in the retail store is until the middle aug

and the hotel are really short staffed in reception and i'd be really letting them down if i left...

In my heart I want to go back to the retail store but in my head im thinking id be mad to leave a full time job for a part time one and really dont wanna be letting them down like they just spent a week training me and i guess i just dont wanna throw that back in their face!
If the retail store hadnt called me despite the receptionist job not being ideal I would have put up with it just cuz its better than nothing:o

    any advice? opinions?
Hope this made sense and thanks for any replies!

Id stay where you are and next time they are "too busy to make you lunch" throw a strop and make sure you get your lunch. Find a lever for example if you give the food staff their payslips the next time they turn up looking for them tell them you are too busy. Youll get your lunch next time.

Otherwise you dont seem to have too many issues apart from the shifts which you knew about anyway?

Have you been accepted to college and everything?
Will you have enough money to keep you while there?

If the answer to both is yes, then leave the job you don't like for the one you do.

These are only part-timejobs (as in not careers) i assume so why be unhappy. Don't worry about letting people down, bosses never appreciate you anyway in the long run!

If the answer is no to either of the questions above then I'm afraid you should stick with the job you have. It makes the most common sense.

However, in my opinion, its better to be poor and happy than have tons of money and not have a social life to spend it on or time to spend it!

Simple answer: look after No. 1, nobody else will.

It's better to be happy than worn out (and hungry).

Loyalty is a two way street, are the hotel are letting you down or is this industry norm.

Being short staffed when lots of people are looking for jobs ??

If you were going to college in September then finishing in August is not too bad. Are you certain that you will get the min hours in the shop , as you'd have no security and could be let go any week. But if you were going back next september then a full time job sounds better.

from what I hear from those in the industry hotels are finding it hard at the moment. Nobody wants to spend money and the trend is towards European style room only hotels with minimal bar and restaurant facilities especially in the high-wage Northern area of Europe.
My brother in law worked as bar manager for years in the trade and found it increasingly difficult. My family ran a B and B in the west in the good years up to 1995 when it was possible to make a decent living at it and the dollar was strong.........
B and B is on its knees now and the Hotel industry is not far behind.
You will find any job you get will have a major difficulty covering breaks and other "excursions" from the normal operating pattern. In the event of breaks, sick days, time off for family difficulties etc. management will have to fill in which by and large they do. It will become increasingly difficult to fill in for anything longer than 15-20 minutes for a break.
What I used to do when confronted with tight food schedules would be to phone ahead to the kitchen and have some grub ready to eat when you get there. Get to know who is in charge of the kitchen and make a friend there if shift patterns allow some harmony in staff being on doing your hours.
At the earliest convenience, raise the issue with your management but in a professional and diplomatic manner. You will find the senior management will move mountains to keep you fed and watered and effective at your post.

Hotel reception is minimum wage. Minimum wage jobs do not get loyalty! Unless you think that the person you will piss off will re-appear somewhere else in your future (stranger things have happened).

The hotel job seems to pay well, however if you have enough money and just need a little bit every week to keep you tipping along then go back to the shop. Don't worry about letting the hotel down, they let you down by not giving you your lunch(as promised) and unpredictable breaks- that's ridiculous.

Its industy norm at least in the 2 ive worked in it is.
Yeah they got over 100 cvs in for my job & interviewed 2 for 2 postions & they hired me & now they've decided they dont need a second person anymore - despite that for the June bank hol weekend for the 8 shifts between fri & mon they have 1 person to do it & another has been told she cant haveit off anymore despite being assured she could have it off

im getting 36 cent more an hour in the hotel than i would in the shop but in the shop get time and a half on a sun .
as for the manager reappearing in my future where i live is a pretty small town so i'd be quite likely to bump into her but im def not the first person to have quit so that wouldnt be too bad.
Career wise I've no intention of staying working in the hotel industry well unless I can't get anything else kinda thing:)
