Where to get braces?

I want to get braces on my top teeth, the teeth either side of my front teeth are slightly behind the front teeth so they look over lapped. Im in my mid thirties and have wanted to get it done for a number of years but finances have stopped me till now.

My problem is I go to a dentist in newry and was wondering would it be better to go to a dentist here as I dont know how often you have to go to appointments and dont relish the thoughts of driving up & down to newry or is it a case that you dont have to go that often?

Also I know most people cant give a price coz each case is different but does anyone have a guide price before I decide to go in Dublin or newry? My teeth are quite sensitive at the moment from white fillings would the braces add to this pain? Also where is good to go in Dublin for braces as I dont have a dentist here its hard to know where to go? I would appreciate any advice people can give me on this.

It really depends on what dentist you go to and how "bad" your teeth are as far as how long the appointments are spaced apart. I had the non-colored silver braces (apparently theres a difference to the colored ones) and my appointments were spaced at about every 8 weeks, one tooth was over lapping the other on top and the bottom were almost straight with one tooth twisted. Some friends I know had the same ones as me and theirs were every 10 weeks and others were every 4 weeks.

Mine cost €3750 euro with a discount of €300 as we paid in full on one day. I had them on for 24 months on top and 18 on bottom (because it was just one tooth they couldn't apply maximum pressure or something and it had to be done slowly by changing the wires not so often).

Some friends of mine told me that they paid monthly and it was €650 for the first visit with a €65 consultation fee, €150 a month and they had to pay for the retainers additionally @ €75 each.

The pain isn't that bad, your teeth will feel sensitive to bite and chew for the first 10 days or so (I couldn't chew a banana even) so it probably would add to the pain of your fillings(I'm unsure, never had any).

I'd advise consulting with a dentist in the area of dublin you're interested in going to and asking for a list of orthodontists. Although dentists cannot promote any one orthodontist if you specify say for eg "an ortho who usually works with children" he'll point out a few.

    Good luck!

just pick up the yellow pages and find 3 orthodontists. go to each one and ask for their opinion on treatment you may need. tell them your concerns and ask for all the possible options of treatment. the orthodontist can tell you this without you having to undergo xrays and other pre op work that will be necessary after you decide to proceed with treatment. remember you are asking for a general overview, not a thorough exam. so the consult fee shouldn't be too high.
if you do that you will be in a good position to make an informed decision.

I would recommend going to a local orthodontist if at all possible.

I know it may be cheaper up north, and if your teeth only need mild correction, it may not make much odds.

I recently got my braces off - mine was a complex case - but I had adjustments every 4-6 weeks which I think is the norm.

However, what can also happen occasionally, is that bits of your braces can come off between appointments. This only happened me twice in 3 years, but if a wire comes loose somewhere, or worse still is causing you discomfort, you want to get it sorted as quickly and easily as possible.

This is the main reason I'd recommend staying local. The first day it happened me, I mentioned it at work and a colleague said that years ago when she had braces, this sort of thing had happened her a few times too, but she had had to go up north to an orthodontist when it did which caused her a lot of inconvenience.
