National Senior Weightlifting Championships

26-04-2009 5:07pm#1The National Senior Weightlifting Championships were held yesterday in Coolmine Dublin. We had a great turnout, 27 lifters in total, 23 guys and 4 girls. Big lifters on the day included Cathal Byrd who got a 142kg c&j @ 73kg bodyweight and Devin D'Arcy who lifted a 120kg snatch and 160kg c&j @ 91kg.
I was very happy with my day, I lifted 5/6 with a 55kg snatch and a 65kg c&j, which included 4 competition PBs and two new National Records. I came second in the women's comp overall which means I'm being sent over to Austria for the Eleiko Women's European Championships at the end on May.
Big kudos also to wasabi who got some fantastic snatch lifts in (a 50kg snatch @ 62kg bw is mighty) but got some unlucky judges calls in the c&j.

loving my nails though...). Hopefully exposure like this will help to increase the public profile of the sport - RTE also had a camera there and we're expecting to see some footage later in May. 2

Thanks - although I really and truly will be going to Austria for the experience and not as a serious competitor. A lot of the girls lifting there will be of an exceptionally high standard and there'll more than likely be a few European champions there. I'll be one of the plebs to make up numbersCongrats and GL in Austria!
It'll be an amazing experience though - not being of the same standard won't bother me in the slightest, sure I'm only at this weightlifting malarky for 8 months so I have plenty of room for improvement. Next years' Nationals, now that'll be a whole different kettle of plates and bars
