I work as a chef in waterford and currently get double time on sunday but my boss has told me that its going to be reduced to time and a third from the end of may. I've had a look around and cant find a single bit of information about it. I know that the hotels federation were calling for it but thats all that has happened up to now. As far as I can see anyway and entemp.ie does'nt have any information on it.

I'm kinda taking this news with a grain of salt because it would'nt be the first time that my employer has tried to pull the wool over our eyes and avoid paying proper pay.
Does anyone have any information on this?

Have a read through the current Registered Employment Agreement for catering employees outside Dublin/Dun Laoghaire. Unless a new weaker agreement is about to come into force I'd say that your employer is chancing their arm.

Bad news. I double checked and it appears that a process has been underway to harmonise certain elements of the two catering JLC REAs. Once the changes have passed through the overtime rate for rostered Sunday work outside Dublin / Dun Laoghaire will be time and a third the same as inside these two boroughs. This process has probably made it's way through the Labour Court by now.

Would it not only apply to new employees or would the existing employees have to agree to the reduction?

When registered with the Labour Court a Registered Employment Agreement (REA) is legally binding across a sector and applies to all workers employed under it's terms.

I did some more digging and it seems that the process is underway but not finalised. Seems a bit unfair to me for staff to be forced into a pay reduction because ibec is looking after its members.
I also saw a mention of a new minimum wage of 9.31 to compensate though.
Will have to wait and see I suppose!
    Thanks for the replies.

In fairness to IBEC they're doing it via a consultative agreement with SIPTU. An REA change is unlikely to be registered without a relatively broad agreement.
