Coverage of the marathon is on BBC usually very good coverage ...hint hint RTE...

Best of luck to TheRoadRunner and anyone else running today.

Leaders have gone out for a WR .

Got up late so missed the opening theme music. :(

Yamamuci is doing well to keep up the front at the moment by the sounds of it.

So who is it in the mens race that thinks they can beat Halie and asked for such a fast pace?

    2:00:58 pace!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭Stupid_Private

The organisers asked for world record pace - but this is a bit much

mad pace 2:01 , i can see a fall off in the second half..maybe ....

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

I'd be very surprised(and jealous) if they could maintain that pace.

What happened to going along the river side of the tower and the cobbles? Thats cheating with them having now changed the route to the tarmac road round the back.

The 19th mile split was 4:24  Can he keep that lead or has he pushed it too soon is the question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,841 ✭✭✭Running Bing

I wonder could one of Wanjiru or Kebede break the record at Berlin this year?

It seems with better pacing and a slightly faster course they would'nt be far off.

Just 3 seconds a mile faster today and it would've been a world record....when you put it like that it doesnt sound like much:D

Hard to believe they are so young as well.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

They probably could have even done it today if the pacing had been a touch better for the first half. Surprised the pacers got it so wrong seeing as they were supposedly able to see all the timings confirmed on the back of the lead car as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

The pace in the 1st half seems to have scuppered them alright. Towards the finish the commentator was going on about how the race was the top marathon race so far this year... he obviously forgot that in Rotterdam there was a sprint finish and it was only 26 seconds off the world record. The bbc commentators get a bit carried away sometimes.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

Ignore anything that Brendand Foster says, he just talks a load of rubbish mostly. Cram knows what he's talking about though.

Yeah, according the them the London marathon is the best in the world.

New pb for TheRoadRunner 2:47:06 , Great running after the injuries over the last few week. can't wait for the race report now a super fast last 10k to bring it home.

    Well done.

Example of perfect pacing from RR if I've the right person on the results.

Negative splits, 85, 82. That's the way to do it. Well done man!

Thats great running...especially with the injury concerns. Reading some of his log was getting me anxious:D

How much did he beat his PB by?

Can;t blame to pacemakers all the time, if it was too fast they should have know it and slower or told the pace makers to slow. Two groups of pacemakers in the event today 2:05 and 2:07 not sure i like all of this a bit ott... let people race i say

I agree with you I am not a firm believer that there should be pacemakers in the race.

I have to say I really enjoyed the BBC coverage. Didnt listen to the commentators much but I liked the mix of elite coverage and then the stories of the real people. Very motivating. Im such a girl- I almost cried along with Keith Duffy at the end:)

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

    Great running RR

Fantastic result for RR as it looked very hot and humid in the coverage earlier.

Glad to know that I wasn't the only person tearing up at the coverage <<blush>>. I always get so emotional over marathons.

It's when they ask people why they're running for their particular charity and you hear stories of how they're doing it for their Mum/brother/husband/sister/friend. Even tearing up now thinking of it. Thought that the coverage was really well done. Would love to see something similar on RTE.

I'd be majorly pissed off if some second rate RTE journalist stopped me during the marathon to be honest. :pac:

But we do run right past the place it's not like it would be difficult for them to do that part.

Didn't BBC have coverage of the Great Ireland run a year or so ago? I'm sure I remember seeing Brendan Foster chatting to one of the Boyz-west-one-life chaps(?) who was running in the Phoenix Park one year anyway.

The only other marathons I've ever watched were the ones at the beijing olympics - is it normal to have pacers for the people competitively racing? I'm fine with the idea of pacers for non-elite athletes, but my gut reaction is that the elite guys should be pacing themselves. Great race to watch, but found all the focus on the pacers to be annoying tbh.

Well done RR, cracking time indeed!

You have a point but no one athlete is gaining an advantage as the pacers are normally there for all of them to use or not.

RTE have covered the Great Ireland Run for a few years now but have Brendan Foster commentating on the race for the last couple of years. I think Foster was one of the creators of the Great Runs, starting it all with the Great North Run (but I could be wrong). This link, his knowledge of the elite athletes and his experience as a commentator probably have something to do with his appearance on RTE.

Yeah, according the them the London marathon is the best in the world.

In my opinion, the London Marathon knocks spots off any other marathon. It is the best organised event and the crowds are unbelievable. Nothing wrong with the course either.

I thought Fosters remark was a bit daft. How can one marathon be the "best in the world"? By what measure? Is it the fastest? Up there but that's probably Berlin. Most scenic? No. Most prestigous/historic? No that's Boston. Biggest crowds? New york has a lot more spectators. I am very inexperienced marathon-wise havng only run Dublin and half of connemara, but calling any marathon the best in the world didn't make sense to me.
btw - well done on the great pr rr - must be an amazing feeling to finish a marathon so strong.

Well done Road Runner ....outstanding time ...put the feet up now for a while and wallow in satisfaction

BTW,i liked the way Wanjiru wore the gold jersey to let all the others chasing him know who he was ( gold medal winner at olympics ),very similar to Phil Tayolr in the darts final last year against barney ( the back of his shirt had "13 time world champ " on the back so everytime he threw barney was looking at it,also...Tiger Woods wearing red on the final day of a competition...michael jordan sticking his tongue out ...and im sure there are others
