I was looking at that Laptop too. It was mentioned in this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055544450

I couldn't find a similar spec laptop anywhere else for that price. I was considering it but it's a little more than I need. Also the weight isn't listed as far as I can see, so prob on the heavy side. In saying that for a core 2 duo plus the other features, it's a good price.

Yea to me it seems like a good deal and the heavyness wouldn't really bother me so much. I'd be more interested in the build quality of it. Any other Medion/Tevion stuff I've got has been fine, well built!

Spec wise it seems pretty alright.
And you cant argue with a 36 month warranty!

the centrino is the only problem i see.if you are happy with the product as is all will be fine, but if you are not and want to add extra hardware the centrino will not be able to cope.
    cheers

Centrino isn't a processor, it's a marketing buzz word that covers a whole range of processors. That core 2 duo processor, although not cutting edge is still a good processor.

36 month warranty is great yes. However, what happens if you have to take it back and they dont have a replacement for you.

Great build quality alright but I have a Targa DVD hard drive player and had to bring it bac to LIDL twice and had to wait for several weeks for it to be fixed and they had no replacement so the 36 month warranty was not as good as it sounded.

If it was me ( and it was me in the market several months ago) I would try and get the best deal I could for a Toshiba/HP/Compaq/ Dell. You have a lot of money to play with.

I got a great manager's offer in Currys Belfast on a HP with fingerprint recognition/ HDMI etc etc. You could also chek out the Toshiba website.

I'd imagine by law that if a company doesnt have a replacement for you, you either get your money back or a product of similar value inplace.

I must say, any dealings I've had with Aldi in terms of honouring warrentys were great, even after the 30 day period in which they say you must contact the manufacturer, Aldi have done that for me. And the manufacturer just let me keep the old broken product and sent me a replacement within a week, on two occaisions!!!
    Not sure about Lidl tbh.

The problem is I dont think its possible to get a Laptop of that spec for that price else where (correct me if I'm wrong). I think its a good price.

Got one today. All good except for that lovely Vista OS, but thats ok, the manual gives you instructions on how to DOWNGRADE to XP using the Cd's provided.

If it wasn't for Linux I'd be considering it.

Page 58 of manual "Getting to know windows vista"

then if your really P***sed of

see Page 68 "Downgrading to xp"!

All I can say is i've been using various Linux live cd's and nothing else all day.

I'm on Fedora now.(and forgot i was even using a live cd to run it)
Runs like a dream.Barely uses the cd drive at all after boot up.

I'm sure I'll need windows vista for at some stage, but hopefully it will be in exceptional circumstances.

I will try and get her running in some triple boot setup.

But for the mo it may be a Pseudo-Commodore €64 setup, press play and wait, then it runs nice.

Was on the bloody vista setup for 10 mins earlier, all you get is warnings and sales pitches, (would you like to start your'e free bulldog trial etc.). NO.!

    A load of noise really.

Oh and heat and weight wise all good.

Compared to my old dell Inspiron, its like having air con blowing on your lap.

Also picked up one of these Laptops. Very happy with it.
Build wise its fairly solid, doesnt feel like a lump of plastic, but not to heavy either and relatively slim. Doesnt get hot at all really (compaired to my Inspiron 5100, I'd be sweating after an hour!!!)
Havent got to test out properly yet though.

Similar to Friday1, I'm considering downgrading to XP. Vista is a bit of a pain, fells like I'm always fighting with it to get it what I want to do!
I'll give it a little bit more time to see if we click but if not I'll be back to XP or maybe Ubuntu but Device drivers might be a bit of a pain for that.

Laptop came with 2 Vista CD's and a drivers CD also(Vista and XP Drivers). It doesn't have a copy of XP OS!!

I wouldn't expect a consumer level laptop to come with a free copy of xp! You can turn off the notifications that pop up whenever you try and run anything, i'm in work now, so i can't remember how to do it, but you can just google it. Tbh, i wouldn't be going back to xp in a hurry, especially if you dont need it specifically for anything. You get used to the feel of vista after a couple of days.

nearly All the beta testers have said that Vista,s replacement is superb and even left them with very little problems with drivers on the Beta version. The way the economy is Windows 7 may come at a very reasonable price, and will be downgradable to xp.its also widely reported that Internet explorer can be removed without all those warnings that most of your installed software may may not work.below is what i received in an email today from a usually realiable source:

According to reports, it looks like Windows 7 will be released October 23, 2009. That's a few months earlier than Microsoft had publicly committed to, and could mean extra sales for the holiday season.
So far, Microsoft has only described its target of releasing the new system three years after Windows Vista, which would have been 23 January. But British laptop manufacturer Acer has told a tech website his firm will be selling a Windows 7 PC after October 23.
Bobby Watkins told pocket-lint.com that Acer's new Z5600 model, specially designed for Windows 7, will be available with the system from that date. He also said customers who buy an Acer Vista PC in the 30 days beforehand will get a free upgrade to Windows 7. That confirms previous reports that Microsoft will allow such upgrade deals, but is leaving the details with individual manufacturers.

Acer will also be showing off the Z5600 in stores during this 30-day period. Presuming it will be running Windows 7 at this time, that suggests firms may be allowed a period to hype up Windows 7 with demos and try to create some buzz over its launch.
Microsoft hasn't confirmed the time table, but speaking before the story broke, the firm's Windows head Bill Veghte said, "A holiday release is accomplishable." An October release would allow the firm to benefit from sales of Windows PCs in the run-up to Christmas.

I bought this laptop from Aldi two days ago. The same crackling or squeaking noise on the right speaker is present on 2 laptops. The first and the exchanged one.I don't know if it is a general fault or it is very bad lack.. This fault appears when the speakers are playing in medium to high volume also in the sample mp3 track (the rock track by Poises). Please check yours so that i can be sure it is not a general fault.

I did a lot of research on this Medion model and eventually decided not to buy after reports about poor screen resolution and no Blue Ray. And the the guy above reported speaker problems on 2 laptops. (Did you get it fixed?)

I've only got a budget of 6 - 7 hundred € so I'm fairly restricted in what I can buy, thus my interest in the Aldi - Lidl models.

Guess I'll have to wait until next time around!

Don't forget that aldi do a 28 day money back on their products.

If you can get one,you can try it out for a few days and then return for cash if it does not suit you for any reason.

    (I did).

No problem with the speakers. The screen size was too big for my needs

    Hey Shovel

Any thoughts on the screen resolution?? It got some pretty heavy negatives on some of the reviews that I read.
