I currently have a '98 A6 2.8 Quattro Sport on a nice set of BBS 18s. It's a nice car by most peoples definition and I've had it for 2 years but I'm not as enthusiasic about it as I used to be so I was thinking abut changing it. It's generally a low cost and high pleasure/ value-for-money car and I can't find anything else that would be as much value for money without spending lots of dough which I'd have to borrow.

On the other hand, I've recently moved into a more expensive place on my own and it's turning into a cash-flow nightmare. Having just spent nearly a grand on service and repairs, it needs €700 for suspension, €500 for 2 tyres, €330 to tax it (for a quarter), the fuel pump is becoming noisey and there are some other irritating problems that I've been meaning to see to for 2 years.

My job is secure enough to consider a loan for €4k- €6k without having sleepless nights. I was thinking about borrowing for a depreciation dead-cert like a mk4 GTi or similar. Maybe run it for a few months while repairing the A6 and repay the loan. I was also thinking about a Saab 9-5.

At then end of the day, I've had speccy cars for a while and I want to avoid bread-and-butter cars as far as I can.

    What would you do?

Mmm a 2.8 petrol would be very slow to shift in the current climate unless its very cheap , unfortunately all the repair values will not add to the value of the car .
If i were u i'd hold on to it and try and get some return for ur outlay

If you got bored with it, buy something else. There are plenty of cars around for sale at the moment. You do not need to spend 5000 on it, buy something for 3000 and keep the rest for tax and petrol. I would rather look around for something similar, rather than a small, dearer, less comfortible car.
If you like E39 BMW, I am selling my one. Low mileage, 2.5 straight six sweet engine, great spec, superb to drive, do not need any work, no cam belt (chain instead, so maintenance free), economical (31 mpg on average), steptronic (manual / auto), climate control, etc...

    Regards.
