This is the variant of Starting Strength which I'm currently doing. Which day would you add in dips or all three days?

    Monday
    3x5 Squat
3x5 Bench press / Press (Alternating)
    Chin-ups: 3 sets to failure

    Wednesday
    3x5 Squat
3x5 Press / Bench Press (Alternating)
    1x5 Deadlift

    Friday
    3x5 Squat
3x5 Bench Press / Press (Alternating)
    Pull-ups: 3 sets to failure

When/If you do get the dip station (it looks pretty solid IMO) you could put a set of dips in between each set of pull ups/chin ups. Whenever I do pull ups I put a set of dips in between.

Also you could try splitting it up.. For example do chins to failure with three sets of ten of dips, then next time your doing chins do 3 sets of ? (insert number here) of chins with the dips to failure. Just another option.

Think I might save money on buying a dip station & use chairs with cast iron plates put on them so they dont move. Anyone on here use chairs?

Looking at adding dips into my workout on starting strength is this advisable? Also thinking of buying the dip station from Irish Lifting.com anyone on here use it is it decent? http://www.irish-lifting.com/product_info_equipment.php?products_id=205
I would sooner get this one, http://www.irish-lifting.com/product_info_equipment.php?cPath=1_8&products_id=173
    Anyone built their own?
Yes, I made a mini dip station from an old table. It is made from 7 metal bars. There are 2 V shapes of equal size, one at the top one at the bottom. Then 3 vertical bars connect the 2 V shapes together. I then have 2 20kg plates resting on the bottom V on the ground to stabilise it. It is quite small, I have to bend my knees and in the lowest position my knees just touch the ground.

I have the use of a bench and never use it. It is a cheap one, if I was stuck for space and cash I would sooner get a dip station than a bench at the same price.

I also have gymnastic rings on my chinup bar and do dips on them. These are very hard at first as you have to learn to stabilise yourself. You will have the same problem with the chairs, balance is a big issue, even with the plates stabilising them. I could probably do 15 chair dips but have done around 30 dips on a right angled railing. Since doing ring dips I can now do chair dips on very flimsy light chairs, like ones you get in schools.

If you look around your area there might be places to do dips too. A park near me has proper parallel bars. But in a nearer park there are 2 sets of railings I can do dips on, and these are actually far better than the parallel bars, I MUCH prefer dips with the bars at right angles.
