Today someone posted the following as the start of a reply to someone's thread: "You are a horrible horrible person, to cheat is one thing ....".

Folks, aside from "attack the post, not the poster" its not on to hide behind anonymous posting so that you can abuse / insult people. It might be one thing to do it in your own name, but its rather low to try to do it anonymously. Expect an extended ban if we ever find out* who posts stuff like this.

    * It can be done, although its rather rare.

I am not whoever you are whining about but your sticky is making me and anyone else with any IT knowledge cringe in its inaccuracy. Unless you are an ISP insider or hack someone's computer you can almost never tell who any anonymous poster is. The longer you leave it up the more people will think you are silly and the worse name you give this site. Your choice whether to leave it up but don't say you haven't been corrected, even though I am typing through my cringing. A very silly sticky, Vicky!

I obviously mean that we could find out their username and ban their account, not their real name.

I'm not sure if I'd consider myself to have 'IT knowledge' but would it not be possible to match IP addresses
    in certain circumstances?
Like if I posted anonymously in 20 minutes time, is it not conceivable that the IP could be logged
and matched to the IP address that my logged-in posts originated from?

If this were possible then surely other information would become available
such as the poster's e-mail address and perhaps paypal details if they'd ever been a registered user.

I'm sure that even if this were possible that it could be thwarted by IP spoofing but at the end of the day,
how many anonymous posters are going to bother do that?

I'm sorry if my post makes you 'cringe at it's inaccuracy'.
Victor's post seemed reasonable to me though.
He qualified his remark and he didn't seem to be making a ridiculous, sweeping statement.

2nd poster is referring to the fact that most people would have internet connections which assign dynamic IP addresses, and in such cases where an unreg post has been made from a user with a static IP address, correlating that with other posts, reg'd or unred'd, is tenuous at best

Folks, this is a notice, it wasn't meant to be a discussion.
