Hearing impairment from middle ear infection

I had a cold which became a middle ear infection which resulted in puss discharge from the ears with blood tinge. On cifox antibiotics for last 6 days. Significant hearing impairment since it started (very difficult to hear people) which hasn't improved although the cold is almost gone and the ears are no longer sore. I really need to hear for work so it could end up costing me money.
Not looking for diagnosis or anything cause Ive been told it can take 6 weeks for hearing to come back to normal while the body reabsorbs the fluid in the middle ear which came about as part of the the infection. Just wondering in the case of anyone familiar with this who had it or treated it
    i. is there anything i can do to improve my hearing in the meantime. The girl in Eye and Ear Hospital said syrigning the ear will make no difference.
ii. will it gradually get better or will it go from bad to perfect in one moment.
iii. can i swim in the meantime wearing ear plugs. I usually swim a lot.
iv. is 6 weeks the normal recovery time or what is the normal recovery time.
