    howdy folks,

    Anyone know much about the postgraduate awards? I didn't get IRCSET funding, so now I've to apply for these.

    What level of grades do people who receive the awards get? I'm assuming a first is necessary, but how good is the minimum?

    What level of funding do people usually get, I've been told that everyone gets the same, some get 8k, some get 12k, some get 16k. No one seems to know.

    Any insight is welcome!

    Postgraduate Research Studentship Awards

    • The Postgraduate Research Studentship Award is open to new and continuing students on years 1 – 4 of full time PhD register.

    • The award is allocated to the School for 3 years i.e. the School may decide whether to allocate an award for 1, 2 or 3 years.

    • The value of the award each year is worth EU/non EU fees plus maintenance of €8,000.

    • There is a maximum of 6 hours per week teaching requirement.

    • There is an income threshold of €18,000 exclusive of fees.

    • There are 65 awards allocated each year.

    • Student may not be simultaneous holders of Government of Ireland or Research Council’s Awards (or any other award with a similar monetary value).

    • A tick box will now appear on the research application form. New students who wish to apply for an award should tick this box to identify themselves as candidates;
      • If a student has omitted to tick this box and subsequently wishes to be considered - the administrator/supervisor may tick this on the student’s behalf;
      • If a student has applied on an older version of the form (without a tick box) they should also be included for consideration.

    • Extra information will also be requested at this point:
      • Have you discussed funding with your supervisor?
      • If funding has been secured for the project please state the funding body?
      • Does this funding provide a student stipend?

    • Continuing students who wish to make an application for a Postgraduate Research Studentship Award should contact their School directly for guidance on how to apply. Each School is responsible for the allocation and administration of this process.
      • A form should be made available by the School to students wishing to register their request for consideration.

    • Allocation of 65 Postgraduate Research Studentships by Faculty for 2009/2010:
    • Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: 26
    • Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science: 28 (Engineering: 5)
    • Faculty of Health Sciences: 11

    • The Faculty Dean in turn allocates the awards to Schools. This is to take place by close of business on the last Friday in January in order to allow Graduate Studies and Schools to advertise the vacancies at the Open Day in early February.

    • Awards should only be made to students:
      • who have demonstrated excellent academic abilities as evidenced in their research award application: a final degree level of ideally First Class Honors, cv, achievements, references, transcripts, research proposal etc;
      • are entering onto or continuing on the full time PhD register;
      • who have not exceeded four years on the research register (all payments of college award funds should cease at that point).

    • Nominations must be submitted directly from the School to Graduate Studies via research.admissions@tcd.ie for approval by the Dean of Graduate Studies.
      • Nominations will be accepted from Schools as soon as the allocations have been made. The 1st of May date will no longer be applicable (this date was used previously to start considering applications);
      • The GSO strongly recommends that the allocations are made as early as possible in order to prevent new students accepting offers from colleges elsewhere;
      • A completed list of nominations must be submitted no later than 1st of July. This deadline is to facilitate students who need to organise visas etc;
      • Schools are encouraged to supply a substantial waiting list as initial candidates may not accept the award.

    • If a School is unable to fill their allocations, the Faculty Dean may redistribute the unused awards to another School within the Faculty. This will only occur after all students on the waiting list have been approached and no other suitable candidates can be sourced by that School.

    • There will be no facility to ‘carry over’ unallocated awards from one academic year to another. The onus is on the School to find a suitable candidate for each of the awards given to the School. If an award cannot be allocated the Faculty Dean will be notified and a re-distribution within the faculty may take place.

    • If a student who has received a Postgraduate Award subsequently withdraws or leaves during the duration of a three year award, the remaining value of the award can be re-allocated by the School. The new recipient (and supervisor) must be made aware that the award is for a specific period of time and is not for the full three years e.g. Joe Bloggs receives a Postgraduate Award from the School of English, However, having completed two years of the programme the student withdraws from College. The School may allocate the remainder of the award to another student from the School of English for the one remaining year of the Award (one year fees and €8,000 maintenance). All the same conditions will apply regarding teaching hours and income caps.

    • There will be a cut-off point by which time an October/April registrand can receive the benefit of the fee payment from the redistributed Award depending on the date the award becomes available (normally, six months after the registration date).

    • There will be no deferral of Awards. Students who defer their place on the PhD register will be considered for an award in the year of their registration and not the year of application.

    • Continuing students who have been nominated to receive the studentship will be officially notified of the decision by Graduate Studies as soon as the decision has been made. The student will be sent the appropriate documentation to fill out and return to Staff Office.

    It doesn't mention anywhere about Masters funding, hmm.

    The term postgraduate encompasses masters. You can receive the postgraduate award for a maximum of two years on the masters register. Additionally, a first class honours is not required, any applicant receiving who has more then a third is in the running, academic results are taken into account when deciding what place you're given.

    As part of the award you're required to teach without additional payment. Most department will pay you for the hours you teach or arrange that only some of the hours you teach will be for "free". However there are some departments which will make you work the full six hours a week for free.
