I was speaking with a friend last night and we were both complaining about steven and what an a*s he is and how broke we all are etc etc.

so when i was thinking of how im going to get to thursday with the 50 quid in my accont, she turned to me and said that if she has less than three grand in her account - that means brokesville for her....I was a bit taken aback.

so how broke do you have to be before your ''broke''

I'd eat that shizzle if i won the lotto

Being broke is relative... a person who doesn't drink or smoke, or spend money on anything other than food would probably think 100 quid is grand, but if i was on my last 100 quid, id consider myself smashed.

The 3grand in the bank might be this girls life savings, so if she has to dip into that for her day to day expenses, I'd say she's broke too!

if i have a couple hundred in the bank i think im broke.

i agree with what someone said about your 3 grand friend. its probably her life savings.

i could live fine with a couple hundred in the bank, but im hoping not to clear it out and have money to save or to fall back on in case of emergency

My bank account literally has €1.86 in it. And I just paid for kitchen paper in Dunnes with a pile of 10 cent coins.

    That's broke.

You're down to your last €1.86 and you spent it on kitchen paper? Prioritise!!!

Unless you are using it as toilet paper, in which case that's ok.

im broke when, my o/draft is maxed and i have no money until pay day..no money, no where to get money, no savings to dip into..NOTHING..literally no access to funds anywhere

i hate when people say they're broke..."well apart from my savings" if you have savings your not broke...you have no cash by choice but you have access to money if you were stuck!!

Broke is when you get paid and a day later you have no money left because of bills and you're into yer overdraft again...
    ..

Sounds familiar:(I used to have savings but I spent all of it on the house deposit over a year ago.

I don't have an overdraft any more so broke is when the cash I take out for the week is gone. In case of emergency it'll be the credit card as there are no savings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,191 ✭✭✭narwog81

-when you consider the -1800 balance on your overdraft as your "zero" balance each month.

-when you are over-over drawn and the bank penalise you with charges making you sink further into debt

-when you know what shops in town will allow you to use your laser card with out the "chip and pin", thus allowing you to further over-over draw

-when you call over to friends houses just on the off chance they might have some food left over from dinner

-when you raid your change jar just for enough cash to get you to the end of the month

-when you borrow money off your little sister who's sole income is from babysitting.

-oh the joys of being paid monthly, nearly 5 years now and i still cant get the hang of it:p

Broke for me was being over 10K in debt, all over drafts and credit cards maxed out, owing a couple of mates money living off the good will of my mates, having no job and sleeping on a friends couch while waiting for my dole application to go through. Dark Times. I now have a job,a place to live and now debt free with savings. The savings will be spent on a masters though so this time next year il probably be back to being seriously broke again, hopefully minus any debt.

maybe you should consolidate your loans so at least you would only have one lower rerpayment monthly to make and you could concentrate on that? cut up the cards, close the accounts. Have a chat with your bank manager or loan advisor, believe me they are there to help you!

broke is not eating for 4 days, being in a good job and putting every 10/20 cent you find into a jar until you can put 4-5 euro of diesel in your car to get to work the next day because your owed 2 grand by three absoloute prícks who are eating food and living comfortably and claiming they cant pay you , while your hungry, and incurring intrest on the 300 euro over your overdraft you are and having the esb/bord gais sending 'failure to pay' notices to your gaf.

i cant wait till may 1st when its over :( and as soon as i can afford a tank of diesel im visiting two of those pricks, the third is my housemate who has dissapeared off the face of the earth for the last 6 days, but ill deal with him later

cards are in the process of being cleared (swapping for interest free periods to different banks)

I dont consider myself to be in trouble (just yet) .... have a fair amount of stuff to sell in order to make payments/clear debts.
    :):):) Keep smiling :):):)

You kinda had to be there. People were talking too much about the recession.
It started out "The recession sucks."
    "you suck"
    "threads about the recession suck."
Now Stephen just sucks and everyone's happy.
So a rose by any other name would probably not smell as sweet is the bulletpoint of this particular lesson.

    Being broke is relative.

A celtic tiger middleclass snob thats just lost everything will look at €204 as being broke

A homeless dude that has just discovered a freshly disposed of nappy with a nice warm meal in it will think hes hit the lotto.

If it's more than a week till payday, and I don't have enough money for a few pints on either Friday or Saturday night, then I consider myself broke.

Doesn't happen though. I'm lucky enough to still have a job in these times, and I'm very good at budgeting.
