Is it an optional extra from Mercedes, I've Armourplated Glass in the car, i've looked at a few other mercs and none of them have it...

    Anyone know anything about it...

Are you sure it's not just double-glazing?:) What model is it?

It's a C200 Kompressor, friend has same car and only has the ordinary glass

What makes you thing it's armoured glass? By 'armourplated', do you mean bulletproof? Or have I taken this up all wrong?

Sound just like jargon for hardened glass which stops stones from smashing through your windscreen

I'd imagine MB offer laminated windows all round as an option, but surely they'd look the same?

it must have been an optional extra, i've seen no other mercedes with it...

car was origianlly bought new in belfast...

Can you describe the glass? Why do you think it's 'armourplated'?

If the car was armour plated it would weigh a fair bit more and be dog slow in a C200K. Plus it would've been seriously expensive to go with it!

What says amour plated and how do your windows look different?

You will know if its armoured glass the doors will be alot heavier that normal and its nearly an inch thick, also dont think you can open the window with a armoured glass

WHAT DOES THE GLASS LOOK LIKE? HOW THICK IS IT?:D

if I was to guess, I would say that is not real armour plated glass but just the toughned glass, there is a product on the market here's a link to it. not sure who does it here in ireland...

    http://www.pgglass.co.za/content/Products_txt.asp

I would be stunned if it was real armour plated, i.e bullet proof, cause anyone putting that stuff in would want to armour the doors as well, cause a bullet will go straight through a door( believe me I have seen the results, and its still lethal)like butter.
put all that weight into a C200 and the car would barely move....

Where did you read it was armour plated?

Does the glass look about 3inches thicker than normal?

The windows are thicker, it's not after market as it's stamped by mercedes as armourplated

I think a pic of the car and a pic of the bit where it says the glass is amoured is needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,282 ✭✭✭BlackWizard

Are they double windows like on an s-class or are they the full 3cm thicker?

I think the s class has about a thumbnail of thickness to them.

Maybe ring MB with your chassis number and ask them?

Armourplate toughened side glass and rear windscreens

Armourplate toughened glass is five times tougher than ordinary glass. On impact, Armourplate glass disintegrates into small cubes that minimise the chance of cuts and other injuries. Armourplate is manufactured in South Africa and is a recognized world leader in toughened glass technology.

its just toughned glass.... not too special

    Funny thread! :D

All other glass except from the windsreen on most cars is normally toughened glass ...that's standard.

Possible extras then would be laminated glass (two thin sheets of non-toughened glass laminated together, double glazing (two sheets of thin toughened glass with air insualtion inbetween) our bullet proof glass (two sheets of really thick toughened glass with a thick laminate inbetween).

"armour plated" could possibly be one sheet of normal, toughened glas with one sheet of film laminated on top of it (inside). The film keeps the glass from falling apart when it gets broken, making it virtually impossible to smash the window ...still not bullet proof though.

The front window says shatter proof...

So it's not bullet proof, better go back to plan b on that bank job I was planning..:)

Looks like your Merc was possibly built in South Africa ...at least its glazing (bog standard car glass with a different brand name :D) seems to have been made there:
